I had a Mini 14 years ago. I loved everything about that except the accuracy. Supposedly they rectified that a little. If that is not of intrest and you don't really want a bolt Browning makes their BLR (or did) in 223. Another idea is although it is discontinued (I'm pretty sure) Remington made a 7615 which was a pump action 223 that took AR 15 magazines. They had mixed reviews. The idea with it was to stream line the training process with PD's that issued the 870. Not as cool as an AR 15 all Guccied up to some but some liked them.
You can find them around if you look.

Rem 700, Ruger M77, CZ, Savage: Good choices.

You can also look into Mausers, Moisins (sp), Enfields, 1903, Garand

They are all very good rifles.

I do not understand why you did not like the AR platform. Identify what it was you did not like and this will help identify a platform you will love!

(I like wooden guns, more accurate than me, capable of going into the field, able to drop what I am hunting, lever preferred over bolt, Enfield/Garand/1903 preferred over all)
