OK, read through all 5 pages... no one mentioned the Marlin 795 which is on sale now at Dick's for $119-$20 rebate from Marlin.

I don't have one but online shooter reviews are very positive. Can't go wrong for under $100 brand new if you're looking for a plinker, small-game shooter, or appleseed semi-auto.

Just like all the responses above... I bought a 10/22 and it is GREAT. I'm shooting more than 'scrats in the pond but I love the flexibility with upgardes. Clean shooting, accurate and reliable! Had trigger work done and am getting a new barrel soon...

    I own five .22 rifles. Four .22LR, and 1 .22MWR.

Remington 597-10 round magazine. Mags are cheap, and easy to find. Very well balanced, and very accurate. Will chew up about every kind of ammo.

No longer have the scope on this rifle.

Malin 925R package-3x9x32 scope. Higly accurate, and will chew up any ammo. Seven round mag, mags are cheap and plentyful.

My favorite Savage MK11FV bull barrel Busnell 3x9x40 scope. Highly accurate. Five round mag, mags are harder to find. Will chew up any ammo.

Marlin 925M-Higly accurate. Seven, and five round mag. Mags are cheap, and plentyful. Will chew up any ammo.

Kel-Tec SU22-BSA 40m red dot scope. Twenty six round mag. Mags are farely cheap, and plentyful. Highly accurate, and will chew up almost any ammo.

I also higly reccomend the Marlin model sixty. 10/22's are ok, if you want to do modifications, but not a huge fan of them.

All I can say is "Bullhockey." The 597 has the sling attachments - all you need to buy is the sling with the quick-release ends (or whatever they're called).

A friend picked one up about two weeks ago, and I finally got a chance to shoot it. His has the black synthetic stock, and is the scoped version.
VERY nice. Between the two of us, we ran about 400-500 rounds though it - of various brands, weights, bullet profiles, etc. Some of it was 30 year old Federal that I had, some 25 year old UMC, and an assortment of others. Never had a failure of any sort, and most of the brands seemed to group pretty well - although the Federal printed a different spot, which kind of surprised me. The scope is not bad. Nothing spectacular, just a decent 3-9X scope.

I've been planning on getting a new .22 to replace my ancient Glenfield Model 60, which is pretty well worn out, and wasn't sure what to get. but after using that 597 for a while, I've made my mind up.

The plain jane 597, does infact need drilled for sling swivel studs.

The ruger 10/22 is an outstanding gun if you want one to keep forever. Marlin model 60 if you want something cheap to get you going.

Still kicking myself in the @$$ for selling the most accurate 22 that I personally ever owned the Remington 512

Been hearing a lot of good things about the Marlin 795 about 200 bucks, and looks to be a great rifle, heavy trigger that is predicatable, and easy to clean
