...Anyone else here ever deal with a ref who abused his power and said things he shouldn't on the field knowing he could do it? I have and that dude deserved to get hit for doing that to kids. I'm not afraid to say it.

Care to elaborate on what the ref in question said?

The tone of your comments makes it sound like you endorse hitting referees. Perhaps you'd like to clarify?

SO, someone SAYS something you don't like, and you think they DESERVE to be hit (Battery)? What's the next step, shooting (murdering) someone who looks at you funny?

Are you saying, that there's never been a time that you thought, "someone should punch that guy in the mouth," based solely on that person's language? You're a better man than I if you haven't.

Sure I have, but "thinking it" in the moment is one thing, "actually doing it" is another, "still thinking it" months later is another thing still...and referencing it months/years later on INGO, to diminish the importance of a completely-unrelated example of thug behavior, is yet another thing still. I'd have more respect for the viewpoint if he said he took action through proper channels to hold that referee accountable for his actions towards kids. That would show an attempt to be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem (and actually prevent that person from doing it to more kids). But no such information is forthcoming, so we're left with what we have.

Every minute that you are in charge of kids, you make a decision to be part of the problem, or part of the solution. The poster in question took exception to a statement questioning whether sports promote good character. Well, somebody once said that "Sports don't build character - they reveal it." I would probably have to agree with that statement. Kids' sports are sorta like guns - they are not automatically good or bad, and can do either good or harm, depending on the character of the people holding the whistle/gun and doing the "doing," if you know what I mean.

There's such a thing as having control over your emotions. You cannot model that for kids by doing the opposite. The last thing the world needs is more hot-head NFL wannabes in charge of kids.

I don't agree with anything you said. I don't think JDT is coming out in support of the poor actions of those kids, I just think he's being realistic, in that sometimes when people popped in the mouth for saying something stupid, others may think...."well, he kinda deserved that." I'm pretty sure that if a group of bikers put the best down on the WBC while they were protesting a funeral, most here would think they had it coming. And in that case we're talking about adults, not 15 to 18 year old kids, who notoriously make bad decisions.

I think most would agree that WBC are wankers, but again, we're not talking about Westboro Baptist Church, and we're not talking about "people in general" we'd like to see get popped. We're talking about coaches and referees who have influence over kids, in activities that are supposed to shape them into better people. Either you agree that there is a line between words and physical contact, or you don't.

One of the character elements sports uphold for kids is control of yourself, including your emotions. You cannot teach that by displaying the opposite.

So 2 people with pads hitting each other, perfectly fine, hell get a running start at each other.

2 people in pads taking separate hits at someone without pads, battery

I'm sure if someone called you a pedophile and a dealer in kiddie porn you'd just laugh it off.

I had a couple coaches in football a lot of us didn't like, there were several occasions during drills that they'd get caught up in the cluster. Adrenaline flowing, emotions high, thing happen. Seen it, did it, we all lived with it.

I'm still with jd on this one. Did they take the best methods and action? Nope. Do they deserve to be suspended form high school sports? Yup. Do they deserve to have felony charges and the rest of their lives tainted by this? No. If the ref was a dick....maybe he should learn not to be a dick

Doing so well after a play.......way worse.
    Doing it to a ref?

I can't believe how some of you supposed responsible gun owners make excuses for this crap.

Many public schools are void of respect and discipline, are merely holding tanks/babysitters so they get gov money.
I bet the two football players in question weren't the only ones causing trouble on or off the field.

My gal is a teacher. Shes had a few students murdered, and other former students in jail for murder.

There is a definite pattern of behavior and it shows rather early.

Your's and my definition of being a "Dick" is not at all like the kids today see this. Any slight or imagined slight is in the disrespect category and is acted upon.

Now really, Ref is not looking. He gets floored and then speared. Tell me how you all would react to this and what you would expect. He could have been grievously injured.

Spearing is against the rules for a good reason, it is dangerous even to a full pads players hence....."No Spearing"

This would be considered assault off the field. Why any different on the field. They openly attacked a non-combatant. Bad choice. Bad choices get you in trouble.

What does the ref want to happen. I will wager he is seriously pissed off.

Was he a "Dick" .......so what. That does not mean he gets blindsided (twice) and then speared.

    This happened it Texas.

If the above video occurred on the street, and the ref was armed, what would have been the likely outcome?

If it had been a parent, or other adult, instead of a player, what would be the likely result?

wearing the same color shirt as 10 other people on the field doesn't absolve you of responsibility for your actions.

And let's be honest, the things that happen on a sports field often aren't weighed the same way they are on a street. You probably can't go to a football game from high school up, and not see a battery committed.

So well after the play? I've watched the video many times, play was still going on.

As for the schools lacking discipline....blame the parents. Teachers can only do so much. At the same time, maybe if parents were allowed to smack and discipline their kids, teachers allowed to paddle their students, there would be more discipline and respect.

Added onto that, I know a lot of "supposed responsible gun owners" that went to high school back in the day and 2 students had an issue with each other, they were allowed to fight after class an no cops were called and nothing ever came form it. You had tensions between 2 people. They got their frustrations out, they moved on.

Not all gun owners think alike. The term "sheeple" gets thrown a round a lot, and the term can go to people on both sides of the fence.

Once again, I've seen team mates and friend carted off the field in stretchers thanks to dirty shots, I've seen injured players stepped on, most of the time a flag wasn't even thrown.

I've seen 2 team mates/friends get in fist fights with each other because of mental stress and exhaustion in practice and after the play, they're great friends again.

I guess no one else here has made an error....ever...especially when they were in high school. No one ever did stupid drag racing that could have killed people. No one ever hit or smacked someone else (cause the right shot in the right place, barely any force, can make someone go blind or cause severe head trauma), and I'm sure none of you drank alcohol when you weren't legal to do so.

Doing stupid stuff in high school is only a recent development I guess

It was a attack…..battery plain and simple. If they had done this off field and attacked a man what would happen……battery. I would suspend them from school and charge them with battery plain and simple. What would happen in the NFL if 2 players did same thing on Monday night football……Oh, its just part of the game nothing to see here…..I kinda think maybe….suspension and battery?

Interesting conversation here, I played football from under 65lbs to graduation of HS, playing varsity in HS we had a ass for a coach. My dad would sit with a few neighborhood father's for all the games he could make, a good friend of mine was Bobby Kirchero, he was our center, during one play he hiked the ball over the QB's head and the other team recovered the ball. Or coach grabbed Bobby by the facemask when we walked back to the bench, and he swung him around and Bobby tumbled over the bench. Well moments later there was a ruckus up in the stands and here comes Bobby's dad. Now his dad was a Ball player himself, he played for Md univ and a year or so with St Louis if I remember right. Mr Kirchero shook off my dad and two or three other father's, when the dust settled it took three or four parents and two policeman to get Mr Kirchero off Coach . Mr Kirchero broke his nose, one eye socket and his jaw. Coach never returned to our HS after that event.
I played from the middle 60's to the middle 70's and until then I never witnessed or was involved in anything like these kids did.

These kids are very lucky that ref was not seriously hurt. A different school is nothing, 500 hours of community service at a spine trama rehab center would not hurt them either.

I have been a Football official in Indiana for 33 years, I am also a HS head coach in another sport. I posted this in another forum.

Taking my officiating hat off for a moment, and putting on my coaching hat there's some things that bother me about not only this situation but many like it. Take some of the fights we've had here in Indiana in the last couple of years. As a HC, I lay out clearly defined expectations for my athletes. In my parent meetings, I lay out clearly defined expectations for my parents. The parents' role is to support their kid/team. I am explicit in that we don't boo/yell at officials, if I feel like the officials need addressed, I as the HC will do it. My assistant coaches don't argue with officials. My players know they don't argue/ridicule/backtalk any official. We have had 0 issues. I still feel like to some extent, regardless of what happened, this falls on the HC. This kind of behavior doesn't just all of the sudden happen. There's stuff that leads up to this, as a HC I think you bear some responsibility for seeing that and dealing with it. We talk constantly with our players about controlling what we can control, and not worrying about the rest of the stuff. You as a coach/player have no control over the officials, you should NEVER put yourself in a position where a blown call costs you a game. Games don't hinge on one play.

Granted Football is a highly emotional testosterone driven game, and I don't coach Football, but I think what I'm saying still has merit.
