:runaway:RUNAWAY!!! I know, just even CLICKING on this thread makes you 1911 people feel dirty. I'm well aware. All joking aside, I could use some help!

I'll be turning 21 next month, it's now time for me to start doing my research in the handgun market. Something that just keeps popping up are 9mm on a 1911 platform. How many of you own something like this? Furthermore, how many of you carry one? What are your thoughts? What are some good brands?

I would also be on a budget, so something under $600 would be great.

Love the platform, would love to own one

I've owned a couple. They're extremely fun, but can be a little more temperamental. Unless you're looking to spend $1200-$1400, I would stick with a plastic pistol (Glock, XDm, or M&P) instead. You're more likely to stick within your budget, and you'll get something reliable right out of the box.

In your budget, the RIA is it.

Once things settle out from my MIL's estate and junk, I think I may look for a very nice DW CBOB in 9mm. Those sure are purdy.

I picked up a Taurus 1911 in 9mm to match my .45 last year. Found it used for $400 from Bite the Bullet. It wouldn't always lock the slide back after the last round, but going to a 13# spring solved that. To be fair, the owner's manual recommends 124 gr and I was shooting 115 gr. Runs like a champ, creampuff recoil, and plenty accurate.

Have you considered a Hi-Power? I just bought my 3rd one a couple days ago. I found a FEG on gunbroker Monday. Won the bid at $357. I will pick it up in a couple days. It is the best of both worlds. 1911 style. 13 round mag. Arguably the best 9mm ever made. I will post pics next week.

...which should definitely not be confused with "HiPoint."

I'll be watching this thread, as I've been looking at 9mm 1911's for a while. Keep up the advice!

I have the RIA 1911 in 9mm. Had it since February and I'm quite happy with it. I have around 800 rounds through it (I don't get to shoot as often as I'd like or it would be more) and the only issue I had with it was a failure to fire using some of my uncle's antique ammo that had Arabic writing on the box. It's ran through factory ammo and reloads flawlessly.
I bought it from a local shop for around 480 before taxes.

I have a Rock Island 1911 in 9mm and I REALLY enjoy it. I had work done to it and it shoots 115 grains as if it's spitting sunflower seed shells.

That is my experience as well, a bit more prone to nuisance on failure to feed problems sometimes - particularly if you go with 10 round mags instead of 9 rounds, but lots of fun. For an all around fun and reliable 9mm gun in the o.p.'s price range I'd be thinking xdm and eventually getting a powder river precision (or equivalent) aftermarket trigger.

Outside of the stated price range. My constant companion is a Colt Defender in 9mm, compact pistol with a nearly full size grip, I love this pistol and no dangling digit.

This is a little out of your budget, but I have Kimber aegis II. Night sights, and in good condition. Was a little picky about mags, but it locks back every time with Wilson mags. Picked it up for $800 from a member here. Not sure about the rock islands, i have no experience with them. Gun is the straitest shooter I own. Got it for my wife, but have kicked around flipping it for a 45. Want to get less calibers around the house. Its hard to get rid of such a strait shooter though.

I've had an RIA in 9mm and in .45 for about a year now, both have been reliable. I shoot strictly reloads and have never had an issue with 115g cast in the 9mm.
From my experience I would recommend RIA to anyone.

I have an STI Escort in 9mm. It is a great gun but it is very picky on what ammo it will shoot. I only shoot factory ammo and do not reload handgun ammo. I took it to an IDPA shoot and it would not shoot the Fiocci 9mm that I had. I had to switch to my Glock to finish the shoot and had no more problems with the same ammo.

The STI is great, but you have to find ammo that it likes, otherwise you are in for a day of clearing the gun. Once you find the ammo that it likes it is great to shoot.

My STI likes Federal or Remington range ammo or most high end personal protection ammo.

Damn it man.........a 9 mm 1911 is like buying a new SS Camaro with a V-6 automatic.

Really...get what you like and join the club. 1911's are an addiction best avoided but if you cant....enjoy the platform. We do. 1 is too many and 6 is not enough.
