Thank you for saving that pup. You won't regret it, spend some time training him and you'll have a great dog. Humane Society can also be a good place for low cost neutering. Dogs and SHTF...
We started living with dogs about 12,000 years ago due to mutual benefit - why do people think a SHFT situation would be any/that much different? As stated above, food is not a primary concern for my dogs either. Heck the little one would hunt for me - she's good for small game. I agree with the heartworm and flea prevention. I also keep de-wormer, extra paw pads (like boots), and first aid supplies we can share. My dogs are well...- Kitty

Dog toys for strong chewers.
Kong bones and dental chews are good (we use the black variety) but Taz can eat them. Nylabone and/or antlers are they only shew I know that hold up (could of months to a year) to REALLY aggressive chewers. If your dog won't take the nylabone try soaking it in hot (not boiling) beef or chicken...- Kitty
