      The undying caliber thread

Re: 45-70 being expensive... Factory ammo, yes, but reloads can be ver cheap. My practice ammo is a 340 gr bullet cast of wheelwright and tumble lubes over 13gr of Red Dot (known as "The Load" by C. E. Harris). This load comes close to replicating th velocity of the original 45-70 BP...

      Shoot your dead loved ones!

Might be nice for a favorite hunting dog - not sure I would pay $850 for me or the dog... Perhaps a do-it-yourself option for the reloader?

      Tumbling...

I have heard of small custom reloading operations using one of the small electric cement mixers (like Harbor Freight sells) to tumble brass and loaded rounds. The drum can hold hundreds of rounds and tump out into a sieve. Probably much bigger than the home reloader needs, but hey, if you...

      -1 Lee "Precision" Safety Scale

I have found my scale to be consistent and accurate- really quite an engineering marvel for $25! I still use my 20 year old model to check-weigh for other scales.

      Reloading the 9x18?

Thanks for the load data. I had not thought of a cast bullet - I think lee makes a mould for the Mack. I rarely load for pistols so I will have to get some fast powder like Bullseye.

      Tactical Pens?

The one difference with the tactical pens, if I recall correctly, is that they tend to be larger in diameter. Can you confidently hold a slim metal pen firm enough to make an effective strike?

      Machete

Going back to the original question of good to great machetes... I worked in Brasil for a few years and saw lots of Tramontina machetes that had been put through more than I would ever subject a cutting tool to... I used one myself and brought one home with me (checked bag, not carry on!). I...

      Can Someone Help Me Find...

You may want to inquire with A. G. Russell; the sponsor the website www.thecuttingedge.com which they describe as: "For nearly forty years, The Cutting Edge® and cuttingedge.com™ have been the largest and most visible aftermarket for knives of all kinds. From 1968 until the 1990s, A. G...

      Tactical Pens?

The "tactical pen",as I understand it, functions essentially as a kubaton. The ones I have handled seem to be a Very sturdy pen, able to withstand a direct strike with the point -although shorter than most Kubatons I have handled. I like the kubaton as a defense weapon - I think the pens would...

      Cleaning walnut media?

Has anyone successfully cleaned dirty walnut tumbling media? You may ask "why would you want to clean media rather tha just replace it"? The reason is that more than once I have settled in for a reloading session and realized my media was just not cleaning anymore and I am out of new...

Help me preserve an ammo crate??

I was thinking of resin and thin woven fiberglass cloth. Depending on the amount of effort you want to put into the project, a couple of thin coats of resin ofer the cloth should give a pretty smooth finish and last longer than the car you put it in! If you are careful with the application...

      .22LR

The actual bullet weight and velocity is much more important to overall accuracy and consistency of point of impact.

What to watch for when buying used?

There is no substitute for test firing if at all possible. Obviously not practical at a gun show, but defiantly possible with a private sale. If I am going to invest hundreds of dollars in purchasing a gun from a private seller I don't know (or even do know!), I consider the cost of an hour of...

Good pistol grip for a Mossberg

Not a fan of pistol grip only for a variety of reasons...that said the Hogue is one of the better I have seen.

      A sharpening Vent...

Some steels I just have never been able to sharpen well. I don't think I have ever gotten an edge to my satisfaction (that was not quickly dull) with 440 stainless...

      Knifemakers: What are you using?

Cubby's advice is right on. For the casual knife maker a lot of sophisticated tooling is not needed - especially for stock removal method. Files and clamps do well for blade contouring and beveling. I do occasionally use my belt sander, but must cool often!

      Reloading the 9x18?

Is anyone reloading the 9x18 Makarov? I love my little E. German Mack. as a light carry gun but there is not much of a selection in serious defense loadings.

Aluminum cases no-go for reloading, right?

Winchester used to sell, I think it was a 16ga, aluminum shotshell years ago. Obviously much lower pressure. I don't know if anyone tried reloading them.

      Commercial .308 in an Ishapore

I have an Ishy which I have modified to a scout rifle configuration. I have shot plenty of ball and standard .308 reloads through it with no problems and good accuracy. YMMV.
