Toyota has gone off the deep end of nannying safety.

Im driving a loaner from the company for my work travels. A 2022 Toyota Cross. My first impression was a simple yet nice crossover.

    Until tonight.

These have an automatic parking brake that sets each time you put it in park. Its slightly annoying in that the car will lurch a bit when it engages, but other than being mildly unnerving, no big deal. Until...

I stopped for gas. I parked at the first pump and got out. Pump is out of order. No biggie. I jump back in and simultaneously start the car, and then put it in drive WHILE I closed the door. MISTAKE!!!! It immediately went into safety nazi mode because it hit drive before the door was closed.

It had an error on the screen telling me I absolutely could not move until I closed the door AND fastened the seat belt. Not the usual obnoxious constant LOUD beeping to nag me to belt up, but an outright arms crossed, pouty faced "Im not moving" tantrum. Sure enough the brake would not release until I put it back in park, fastened the seatbelt, and then put it back in drive. Even pushing the release button didnt work. All to move 20' in a parking lot to move to another pump.

    Ridiculous.

My opinion of this car just tanked.

Actually, if you search, a lot of cars are doing the same thing. Some of them even have a "teen" mode which you can set which does the same thing. It is only going to get worse.....

Now the offhand comment the mechanic said when he gave it to me makes sense.

Apparently its hell on mechanics. The tradition of driving the vehicle onto the lift by double checking your alignment by looking out the open door isnt happening with this car. He has to get the director of transportation to stand in front of the lift and give him hand signals to get it on perfectly.

Just remember, nothing parties like a rental.

My truck (GMC) will set the parking brake if I’m on enough of an incline by itself. The next time it sets, I’m going to try and remember to see what it does if I through it in D with the door open and no seat belt.

I wish vehicles had more safety features but for others on the road instead of the driver. I would like to see a safety feature that automatically parked the car and locked the engine out for 3 hours if the driver spends more than 2 minutes in the far left lane driving at or below the speed limit when traffic is light and the roads are dry. The same for those that do not accelerate sufficiently when on a ramp trying to merge or those that sit at green lights for more than 3 seconds without moving. Repeated violations would increase the amount of time of lockout.

How about for people that stop in the middle of a roundabout to wait for traffic from the right?
The car should taze them unconscious.

I was saving the "taze them unconscious" feature for a special Johnson Co. model that would deploy when the driver either stops at a clear roundabout after rolling through a stop sign or does the patented JoCo 3 point stop at a stop sign.

Yup. Some of these safety features absolutely suck trying to get a car on a lift

That 1965 F100 with a straight-6 and a 3 speed on the column is looking better all the time.
Yeah I can agree with that. I would love to have an older truck like that in great shape except I really don't have any need for a pickup truck but if I found one like that I might try to get it.
