It still has its place. But that place is getting smaller and smaller. IMHO 20 years ago it was great. slightly hotter than the 45, but with a flatter trajectory. The only downside (for me at least) was that was a snappy round, and follow up shots took longer.
Fast forward to today with advances in ammo, and that advantage is not so clear. Modern defensive ammo advances are making the 9mm more and more effective, negating some of the gains a 40 would get you.
Two years ago I sold off all of my 40s. My P91DC was a tack driver, but just too damned heavy and it just sat in the vault. I wasnt accurate with my G23 or G27. I traded for a G19 and G42. Best move ever. I'm now more accurate overall, and followup shots come quicker.
I wont look down on anyone that likes the 40. If you like it and it works for you, great. But I do know a lot of people are settling on the 9 for capacity or the 45 for power. I think eventually the 40 will go the way of the 10mm; a niche caliber that few die hards will own for their specific personal reasons.
It is slowly but surely losing popularity. I own and carry a forty and will keep it. I had no trouble finding it in 2008, 2012, and will likely be able to find cartridges and bullets in 2016. I see no reason to completely dispose of the caliber as it is a viable option.
I have 2 CZ's in 40. They are tack drivers and recoil is very manageable. Being a dyed in the wool 1911 guy my help with this.
I do like them.

Completely agree. I've shot a couple of guns in .40 (FNX and Glock) and while they were okay, I was never attracted to the round. Traded for a CZ 40P and I love this gun. I have to say that after I got into 1911's, I've had a hard time enjoying shooting 9mm. This gun gives me something besides 1911's to shoot and still really enjoy it.
Uh-huh, and, how did that make you feel?
