So let me see if I have this covered right?

    --IL--
Driving straight thru it and WILL NOT be stopping for jack!
So CC while driving is :yesway: or being the passenger while CC is :yesway:

Should I stop for gas (99.99% not going to happen) anyone who is CCing must
    1) unload sidearm
    2) store sidearm in a container (ie. glovebox or car gun safe OK)

Can the ammo or mags (with ammo) be in the same container as the unloaded sidearm? :dunno:

    --WI--
WI is OK with an IN LTCH per http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/wisconsin.pdf
So CC like I normally would while in IN.
Stay away from the usual 'GFZs' (public bldgs, schools, courts, PDs, etc)
    **AND**
signs carry the weight of law so if I see a GFZ sign DO NOT enter that building.

Also do not have to inform police.

    So am I missing anything?
    Thanks

    yeah ... [STRIKE]bail[/STRIKE] bribe money.

On serious note, will you be driving through Cook County?

NWI to Madison, WI will sadly make one go thru Cook County.
Not sure if I should do the toll road (80/94 to 294 to 90 & into Madison) or no tolls (80/94 thru Chicago to Milkwaukee to Madison all via 94).
The second adds 30 mins to the drive buts gets one out of IL faster.

Not sure which route will have more construction. :dunno:

The way I read the law, you do not need to unload your firearm if you stop for fuel. Just need to stow it in the locked vehicle or in a locked case.

But I am not a lawyer.

Depends a lot on when you will be going through. Monday through Friday you do not want to go through downtown Chicago from about 7am-10am and from about 3pm-6pm. It will take forever. Milwaukee is not too awful bad but the stretch between Milwaukee and Madison can be a parking lot during rush hour.
If it were me i would go 294 to 90. A lot of tolls, but less traffic to deal with.

This is my understanding as well. I also keep a printed copy of the new law in my wallet, for quick reference if needed.

I'll be getting married in Madison, WI this saturday. Come join the fun!
I don't know where in NWI you're located, but I always take 74 to 39 in IL, then 90 straight into Madison. But I'm coming from Indy, so I don't know if that would be practical for you. I love 39 though, all rural and minimal traffic. Too bad Chicago ruined that beautiful state.

    When will you be leaving?

As for the gun, as already stated often keep it in the locked vehicle. Do not get out of the car with it unless is it unloaded in a case.

I'll be taking the I-94 route through Milwaukee this am on my way to Ft McCoy. Most construction that was going on this summer has been finished but, I think the ramp work from 894 to 94 on the west side is still closed, so if you run this way, stay on 94 through the city. I'll make sure to post up a traffic/construction report.

BTW: You can avoid the toll in 94 North of Evanston by taking US 41, it will merge you back to 94 a little north of Great Lakes. There are a few stop lights, but I believe it's fewer miles.

    Road Report:
I 94 is pretty clear thru Chi after the 55 split. There is some const after the 90/94 that ends at the State Line. (how much I don't know because I don't travel the tollway)
Looks like the 894 bypass in Milwaukee is open on going construction extending to just passed the west merge with 94.
Clear sailing to Madison from there.

It's between $7.90 to $12.40 (one way) if I use the IL tollways vs $0.00 but 30 more miles if I go the long route.
What I would save in time comes out to about the cost of gas/miles.

I travel to Madison at least once a year. I'd recommend 80 to 355 to 90. Not sure about construction on 90, but you could take 88, too. Stay off 294 - there's always too much traffic.

I've never had any traffic on 355 and I'd say it's well worth the extra miles to be as far from Chicago as possible. Make sure you get an iPass - tolls are double without one.

I took 90 from 290 to Rockford yesterday, it's still a mess with construction. 45mph speed limit most of the way and it's like a 50 mile stretch. Saw 5 or 6 state troopers doing revenue enhancement, so watch the speed if you go this way.
