I'll start this off with a little back history about myself since i'm new here.
I am currently an active duty Marine stationed in 29 palms California. I have been stationed here for the last 4 years and my last two deployments. I have owned some guns but generally i love shooting anything from an m9 to a mk19. I own a Glock 23 gen 4, Ruger gunsite scout, Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22, Ruger SL22, and a Remington 597. I shoot a lot. Generally it averages out to about 200-300 rounds a month from the glock and anywhere from 500-800 a month from the others combined. Now on to the meat and potatos.
January of 2013 i get back from christmas leave with my family to find my house broken into. door jambs shattered, sever windows jimmyed open...oh and about 10k in electronics and jewelry stolen. Upon my return on january 2nd we boarded up the house as best we could and let our landlord know. We went to sleep after the police left and basically just hoped for the next day to be better. However at about 1am i awoke to my front door being kicked in so what did i do? What every person in that situation would do i grabbed my glock and put him and his buddy on their face in my living room while my girl called the police. Upon there arrival again (it only took them 45 minutes of holding these two at gun point) the police arrived i explained what i did. One of them was arrested on a seperate warrant and released the next day. The other one walked out my front door.
Now comes the good part. The police confiscated my glock for "brandishing a firearm". Bear in mind this was on January 3, 2013. I just got my pistol back on August 13, 2013. Over 8 months to get my pistol back with no charges pressed against me. Unfortunately (and not for lack of trying) no charges were even pressed against the doucher who broke into my house.
California does have a castle doctrine however no stand your ground laws and the law specifically states that the assailant would have to have INTENT to cause severe bodily harm or death. Which he didnt have.
Moral of the story be glad that Indiana has laws that support the citizens and encourage the lawful use of firearms and to protect your home and family. Thankfully i am getting medically retired on oct 1 and will be able to move back to Indiana. The days of living in Kalifornistan cannot end soon enough.
And here is a fun little afghan pic to end the rant/post with. This was on my second deployment to Afghanistan in a compound that had roughly 25 camels; by and far not the norm in sangin especially in that area where most people have less than an acre of popee to make their living on.
