I had a vision today and lets see what you guys think of it . I posted a thread a couple days ago about on legal handgun loads. Well today this hit me , lets say I have a rifle laying around in say 7mm 08. In the state of Indy thats illegal to hunt deer with in a rifle configuration . So instead of saving my pennies to buy a legal handgun I send the rifle barrel out to be cut down and recrowned and have a aftermarket pistol grip made for it to make it a legal handgun to hunt deer with . Would I be considered a redneck ?

I think that for a gun to be considered a pistol, it has to have originally been manufactured as a pistol.

I thought there was some rule about if it ever had a rifle stock on it that it couldn't be converted to a shorter barrel with a pistol grip on it. Not sure if it would classed as a SBR or an AOW...

*wanders through the depths of IN Code and hopes one of the NFA guys finds it first*

When you take a rifle, cut it down and put a pistol grip stock on it, you are not actually making a pistol. You are building a short barreled rifle. Whole new set of rules.

edit: the guns posted above where never rifles. They are funny looking pistols.

Now you're talking about making an SBR(that in this case happens to look like a pistol), using it to hunt with, and hoping you don't ever get caught.

Once a rifle, always a rifle.

You can make a rifle out of a pistol, but a rifle cannot be made into a pistol (only an SBR).

Well, there are more rules for the specifics. I hope i have my numbers rigtht: If you put a pistol grip stock on it and it's still over 26" long total, then you have not yet made a pistol EVEN IF it looks like one. If you cut the barrel and it's still over 16" long, it's still a rifle. If you cut the barrel, put a new stock on it and it's shorter than 26" overall or less than 16" of barrel, then you have an SBR. If you have rifle with a 16" barrel and it is 26"+ even with a pistol grip stock, it's still a rifle and you're all legal. (well, still illegal to hunt deer with)

I hope some part of that made sence.

And that rule includes a ten year stint in a federal hotel. And discussing it publicly shows intent.
But Boss, I've been saying it's illegal the whole time without ever expressing interest in pursuing it.

There needs to be a sarcasm symbol.
