I have been asked multiple times while OCing if I am a cop. I simply reply "no". A few people have asked why I have a gun at this point. What do you guys reply to these types of questions?

Would it be appropriate to respond "I'm not on duty"?

Heck, I am not a cop so I am never on duty. Not a stolen valor type comment, more a half truth that avoids awkward debates with uneducated people.

That would seem to be implying that you "are" an officer. There is a law against that.

Sec. 6. A person who falsely represents that the person is a public
servant, with intent to mislead and induce another person to submit

detriment in reliance on the false representation, commits
impersonation of a public servant, a Class A misdemeanor. However,
a person who falsely represents that the person is:
(1) a law enforcement officer; or
(2) an agent or employee of the department of state revenue, and
collects any property from another person;
commits a Level 6 felony.
As added by P.L.126-2012, SEC.54. Amended by P.L.158-2013,
SEC.505.

It may not be prosecuteable if you don't take advantage of them.

Ask them if they read or see the news.

I often ask if they have a fire extinguisher in the house/car. Same principle.

Also, I don't OC but my brother does. I've never seen one negative encounter in over two years. Maybe he just looks nice or something... yeah, that's it because were twins

This is why I typically don't OC. I don't want the attention and I don't always have the time nor the energy to want to get into a gun debate when I'm running errands.

I always say carrying a gun around is a lot easier than a cop. They usually chuckle.
