If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
That succeed line doesn't change what he said. In fact, it supports the rest of the remarks on how the collective is responsible for every success that an individual has had.
Meh. It was an unfortunate slip. When looked at in context, it's pretty obvious where he was going. From the speech transcript, here's the next line:
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires."
Pretty hard to disagree that no man is an island. It was an unfortunate choice of words. Making a big deal out of it is just as stupid as making a big deal out of Romney saying he's not concerned with the very poor.
"I'm in this race because I care about Americans. I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich, they're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of the America, the 90 percent, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling."
Taking what someone says out of context to make them look bad is the mark of desperation. Unfortunately, most people don't understand what a straw man fallacy is. It's stupid and makes those who fall into that trap and repeat it look stupid as well.
That's one interpretation, and one fueled by emotion and preconceived notions of what people want to believe.
There's another interpretation, one that takes logic and reason into account to understand that very few people do very few things alone. Anyone who believes that he achieves anything with precisely zero help from anyone else is an arrogant fool.
It's a very simple puzzle. People who have the drive and ambition to succeed aren't going anywhere without resources. Resources by themselves aren't doing anything without someone with initiative. For success to happen, everything must work together in just the right way. That's why not every business succeeds.
Typically, when someone says "the point is...", what usually follows those words is THE POINT.
I don't like Obama for many reasons, but there are far more valid things to focus on than this. Harping on this is just pedantic.

The point is..... obama is a socialist.
The message he is implying is that nobody got anywhere without daddy.gov helping them
and therefore all monies and property are rightfully the governments to do with what they see fit.

The argent Obama haters pick the dumbest stuff to hate him for. Why not just stick with the fact he was a horrible President.
Focusing on things like this, the birther garbage, etc just makes you look silly and takes away from any good points you actually do have.
