Stop it! Stop jacking with guns where it is unsafe.

You do not jack with your gun "in the parking lot", in the squad bay, in the gun store, or dry fire in your bathroom.

Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day: Detective Bret Starnes | The Truth About Guns

If you must load or unload, get a sand barrel or a stack of phone books wrapped in duct tape.

Parking lots do not have magic force fields. Your bedroom is not steel plated. Stop jacking with guns.

Seems like we've heard about a similar incidence like this happeninig not to long ago where somebody was jacking with their gun and shot themself in the hand. Must be the new trend. Good thing i've never been a trendy, kinda guy. Stop messin with your guns. The 4 rules of safely handling your fireams are words to live by. And just pick out a good magazine or newspaper to pass the time when takeing care of your business while you're on the throne. It's much safer.

In the Corps, they had a saying called the 10% factor. 10% of the people, everywhere, are screwed up and don't belong there. Maybe that guy is a 10% cop?

I watched a guy do it at PSS in the parking lot. He thought the safety on his 1911 was a decocker

Hey now, don't be so hard on Detective Starnes. At least he had the presence of mind to be sure he wouldn't crap in his pants when he shot a hole in his hand. :):

Maybe he should have pointed it between his legs instead of at his hand.

I just don't anyone at INGO to get hurt like this poor doofus.

I know we mock the low gun handling skills of (some at least) police officers because of political reasons or because we are victims of poor gun handling by the police, but this kind of stupidity happens in the gun culture too. Heck, many people at INGO do not believe that weapons discharge upon loading or unloading.

As this does happen, have a solid backstop IF you must jack with your weapon. Otherwise leave the stupid gun alone.

Don't show guns. Don't get them out of holsters and wave them all about. Don't load or unload "in the parking lot". Let it be.

jblom, not tracking. What do you mean (sorry I just don't understand).

Realism for an admin load or unload?:dunno:

Most gun owners set themselves or others on fire or destroy property during admin loading and unloading. Have a proper backstop as the gun can go bang anytime you jack with it.

I get griped at a lot because I refuse to call them "Accidental Discharges". In my opinion, an accidental discharge is one that is caused by a combination of unforseen chance, a broken or ill-operating part, and an unavoidable incident of bad luck (i.e. someone tripped and fell into a shooter, who dropped his gun on the hammer, which broke the sub-standard transfer bar and fired the round.

Everything else is a Negligent Discharge because they are entirely preventable. To call them Accidental is to avoid assigning the appropriate level of responsibility that is warranted when handling a deadly weapon like a firearm.

    Just one man's opinion.

Hmmm, It never occured to me that my gun could go off when I chamber a round. I always keep it in a safe direction while racking the slide though, so I guess I am covered.

I remember seeing a (kevlar?) mat with a red dot on it to place the muzzle of your pistol on when "jacking with your gun" in case it went off, the mat supposedly stop the bullet.

Anyone know what I am talking about here?

You know, honestly I don't think any of us care one bit about the number of accidents that happen. I don't ever stop twice and think about all the car accidents that happen.

So it must be something else driving our concern and anger. If your angry, its because something is hurting you in some way. So, how could a guy shooting himself or having an accident with a firearm hurt you? Oh yeah, that's right. Its because it gives the anti-gun agenda incidents to use against us. Incidents they can point to to justify why you and I and "Joe Blow" citizen should not be allowed to have weapons.

Is that how you want to live? Walking on egg shells. DO you really think we'll ever stop most the accidents? The correct attitude is to embrace the accidents. Say what? Yeah. Look, if you have a freedom: driving cars, flying planes, firearms, drugs, food... some people are going to abuse or have accidents while using those freedoms. And that's the price we pay for having them. We don't take them away as a nation because some people screw up or tragically die before their time.

Rest assured guys that the progressive socialist movement in the West and America has their eyes set on your guns. They hate the ideology that people should be allowed to be armed to defend their lives and their rights. You can walk on water, raise the dead, and heal people and they will still hate you support firearm ownership. Understand? They are your enemies. Politically we need to make sure we're helping pro constitutional and pro second amendment movements and personally we need to continue preparing and be ready to defend our rights as a nation if needed.

Ok my rant is over. Hope that helped anyone who is embarrased or discouraged by firearm accidents. Guys, don't be afraid of them. They WILL happen, they WILL happen again. We have to embrace them and promote the ideology that if you have freedoms accidents can happen and some people will abuse those freedoms. But we keep the freedom for everyone, we don't take it away because 0.001% of the population can't handle it.

DO you really think we'll ever stop most the accidents?

With proper education, yes, we will stop most of the accidents.

I understand that negligent acts will occur even among the highest educated shooter. Heck, just look at all the accidents at Gunsite for example.

I understand that accidents will transpire. A firearms accident happened to me. Hey, did I ever tell you guys about the 870 at Shootrite Academy?:D

However, our goal as a gun culture is to mitigate the damage. Remember, that which will not regulate itself WILL be regulated.

While no one can fault you for your desire for the firearms culture to be as safe as it can be, I disagree. As firearms get more popular, more accidents are going to happen. There is no laws requiring mandatory training and even in organizations that have training (such as military or law enforcement) there are still plenty of accidents. Humans are imperfect. Very imperfect. There is a price to pay with freedoms. Overall its worth it. I think if you believe that we can eliminate most accidents via training your simply setting yourself up for disappointment. Don't take this as if I'm inferring that safety awareness or training is not needed or shouldn't be supported. I'm not saying that.

However, one way we could get some cost effective training for firearms handling is to include it in public education. And not just once either. Maybe make it a yearly or bi yearly thing. Good luck doing that with your marxist influenced public education system though.

I was being sarcastic after a recent thread titled "Do you wear Earpro when you train." The OP asked if anyone trained without earpro occassionally so they would be used to the sound of a gunshot, given that in a true defense situation, many of us wouldn't put on our ears and eyes and then shoot.

That then was followed by a sarcastic comment that if we really wanted to train effectively for a defensive situation, we should first shoot ourselves so that we could train with the simulated adrenaline rush and pain a gunshot would bring on.

Sorry...didn't mean to jack the thread...just trying to make a funny...:)
