I would definitely suggest having her handle some handguns in a gun store to see what feels comfortable. Then you can see if anyone local has a few that she can test out.

My wife has guns ranging in caliber from 22 to 44 mag. Her favorite gun to carry and shoot is a Smith 37 38 cal air weight. We are confident with its stopping power using defense loads.
