Honestly folks whats next...If the states get there way with getting rid of the collective bargaining agreements whats next and to who? In a few years when these states are still in a deep whole what are the politicans gonna do or who are they going after next to make up for there poor goverment choices? The states already said it will help but not eliminate the states debt. Any ideas how far this will go and will it eventually effect everyone union or not?

Well, first off, states are only dealing with PUBLIC employee unions. Dealing with the sweet-heart deals many of these unions have for their health care and pensions is a MUST DO item. The time of easy money is gone. Public employee's have to pony up for their benefits just like the rest of us are (if we have them.)

The only think I can see happening with other unions with relation to states, is getting rid of laws that require contracts to only go to union shops, or pay prevailing union wages.

Not sure what other laws there might be regarding unions, but the unholy alliance between unions and the Democratic party must be broken.

What's next, hopefully, is for states to start pulling out of the various service sectors they have traditionally interfered with, and allow the market to work things out. Let's see some roads privatized, some charities started, some tough love initiated, and some regulations demolished.

Nothing has been said about the politicians benefits that they are able to vote for themselves. Those are the sweetheart deals nobody is clamoring to end.

The next step will be allowing the states to file bankruptcy so they can get out of their contracts with venders and avoid paying the fed back.

Gotcha - wasn't clear from the original post.

Entitlements are the elephant in the room. What is it, something like 2/3rds of the Federal budget. Without controlling them, we will go bankrupt. Cutting out waste and fraud can only save us so much money. All entitlements are going to have to be means tested, the benefits reduced, and the eligibility tightened (such as raising the retirement age.)

So we are talking about a fundamental change in the social contract, which is going to upset a lot of people, to put it mildly.

Here's a couple good graphs of where the money goes, and why education reform is so important. 52% (close to 7.5 Billion) of the state budget goes to K-12 education.

Those are a drop in the bucket though. Cutting those would be a good symbolic measure though. And maybe, if their pay, and benefits were cut, we'd have fewer career politicians.

So 65% of the States budget goes towards education! Well thats balance. Let's not touch that. After all children do belong to the state.
I thought the lotterys and casinos went to fund education? If you win a 300 million powerball jackpoit and take the cash payout you are lucky to recieve 1/2 where does the rest go?NOT EDUCATION like it was meant for

These days are just the fury of the populace realizing that huge sums of money have been blown for nothing and now we still owe the bill to be paid. Unions and public sector workers in general have led the good life for way too long compared to the private sector. Those who squeal the most are the ones losing out. You can't take something away from those accustomed to getting the benefit. Ever taken a pacifier away from a toddler? That is what we are seeing. It's time to realize that govt can't be all things to everyone. Life isn't fair and if you don't like your station do something about it and become upwardly mobile just like the thousands of Americans did before you! Stop whining and start working! All govt's at every level need to be budgeted and balanced spending wise. Feds, States, Counties, and towns ALL are bankrupt! Obviously this economic model is a colossal failure all the way around!!!!!

Cutting through all the political posturing I don't think anything will change. Assuming that a wizard could wave a wand and make 50% of the state's deficit disappear, it would just be pork corruption as usual. WIth all the creative accounting government uses I don't see how you can get a handle on things until they break.

Exactly right. These people have to have reality check, we are tired of paying for their standard of living, a standard most of us don't know.
