I am putting together additions to my current items I keep in my explorer.

Right now I have a craftsman 53 piece socket set, 8 metric/8 standard wrench set, work gloves, duck tape, electrical tape, hammer, screwdrivers, 6-inch plier, small channellocks, lineman plier, wire cutter, Flashlight, jumper cables.
What am I missing? As I am typing I just thought i might keep some misc bolts/nuts.

Tire Iron or a 3/8 drive breaker bar.

Also maybe a tire repair kit and a pump either manual or one you can plug into the accessory outlet.

    And a decent compact jack.

I sell car parts for a living...

Shallow well or deep well sockets? You will need both.
Oil (2 or more 2 qts)
    Antifreeze
Tranny fluid (2 or more qts)
Washer fluid (use winter all year)
    extra serpentine belt
1 extra spark plug wire (most part stores have and sell them individually, buy an extra of the longest one your car has)
-or- if your Ford is coil on plug, have an extra coil. (they are notorious for failing on Fords)
    Blanket
    Handwarmers
    flashlight
    batteries
    hose clamps
    duct tape
    wd-40
    flares (pyro or LED)
bright red rag (for signaling distress by hanging out rolled up window)
    collapsible or pack shovel

If space isn't an issue, maybe just keep it in there, but you'll find that it only takes a few sockets to do just about everything on that vehicle.

It actually rides in a secret compartment and is in a nice case. The majority of this stuff is in a soft sides tool case in the back .

Didn't see hammer, strap wrench, or monkey wrench. I have had to turn the motor over without the starter before, monkey wrench on the crank pully works great. Electical tape. Zip ties. I like to keep an electric impact as well. I also used to keep jump pack in place of the jumper cables...only works if you keep it charged, also doesn't work if you have a diesel. Couple hose clamps.

I used to keep all that kind of stuff in my old Ford and Cherokee. I have scaled back since I got my newer truck but still keep the basics.

I would keep a small can of kroil, everything on my vehicle seems to be rusted on :)

    Maybe a Life Hammer?

Looks like most of the important stuff has already been covered. This isn't really a breakdown issue but it sure is convenient to keep some extra bulbs for your headlights, tail lights, brake lights, etc. If you think your vehicle could be used to help others occasionally, a tow strap could come in handy too.
