Sell it. Someone else out there is probably looking for one, SERPA's are pretty popular.

Good on you to recognize a potential safety issue you feel you could possibly encounter and not disregarding it. I too, do not care for that type of retention device and would much rather have a hood or Safariland ALS.

I picked option number 3, but I am often just looking for an excuse to grind/cut/break things. Since my unfortunate episode with a perfectly decent chinese sks, I have made it a policy to not "grind/cut/break" things that I like, so that would make the serpa fair game for my dark side/dremel.

I have a safariland 6378 and the retention release is on top, its actuated by your thumb, and I like it. Something to think about.

Use a heat gun to bend the paddle to a 90 degree angle and remove the retention device...now you slide the paddle in between the mattress and box spring in your bed and have a perfect bedside holster.

I used an old one I had laying around to mount to the backside of my night stand out of sight, that way gun is safely in a retention holster next to bed. It also makes me sure I am fully awake to grab gun.

Option 4: SERPA has a Molle platform (for a go bag or kit).
Option 5: I use a thigh platform when in the woods or fishing to keep it out of the way.
Option 6: Can be used in a closet or your car, even upside down (as mentioned).
