I feel ya, I can't seem to stay away from that lil' Russian gal either.I prefer the .30-06 round, but I do have an affinity to the 7.62x39, as well.
I toted around an M14 before they forced the 16 down our throats. I have plenty of memories of the 14. I loved that rifle and what it could do. 7.62 works.
I had a 1917 30-06 with a medium Douglas barrel, Bishop stock and a Redfield peep. Absolutely a gorgeous rifle, the smith that sporterized it done one heck of an impeccable job. During load development I hit it's sweet spot putting 5rds into one ragged little hole at 50yds. Sold it a few years later to get a girl a DVD player...dumb youth.... a 1917 that was rechambered to 308 norma mag.
