This is on my list, but I intend to start with the hobbit, and I think i'll wait til winter. Somehow, LOTR just seems like a winter tale to me. Kinda like the Harry Potter books.

And right now I'm on a Crichton kick. Just finished this...

Its good. I can't remember if I read it before or after Andromeda Strain but I like Crichton's writing style. Vaguely reminds me of Clancy in the sense that he seems to know quite a bit about his subjects and it is informative fiction sometimes.

I'm the opposite now. Heard of the movie, but never saw it. I read Jurassic Park, Lost World, and Pirate Latitudes by Crichton last year, and thought I'd hit a few more of his biggies. The book was good.

Agreed. Everything he writes seems very well researched, at least to the layman. And he covers a broad range of topics.

And when I get tired of reading about UFOs, eastern mysticism and the charismatic,

This is a reread from 25 years ago prior to becoming Orthodox

Started Lord of the Rings... again
I just finished reading through the entire trilogy for like the fifth time this past summer.

Currently I'm on a big Cookbook kick. I just bought a copy of "Afield - A Chef's Guide to Preparing and Cooking Wild Game" by Jesse Griffiths. Super informative and lots of how-to's like skinning and field dressing small game in addition some really interesting recipes!
