Here is the SIG POLICY from the gaming clan I belong to that can give you ideas for this site. We were having issues with very BIG SIGs that took up more space than the actual text the member wrote and we also were having issue with some XXX rated SIGs. Our clan is family oriented and porn is not allowed in our forums. (ww.taw.net).

Our full policy can be found here: The Art of Warfare

    3.1 Forum Signatures

    TOP
Topic: The policy regarding The Art of Warfare forum signatures.Release Date: 11 Mar 07; Update: 03 Apr 09 Release Date: Obsolete Policy 03 Apr 09 Section 1: Size Limitations

    TOP
A forum signature can be composed of two sections: main signature and optional signature area.

The main signature's limits are as follows:
    Maximum height = 150 pixels
    Maximum width = 600 pixels
Maximum file size = 512 KiloBytes

The Main Image limits are for all of your signature graphics with the exception of the medal bar (see below). If you want to have some other dynamic sig like xfire it all has to be within the 600x150 limit.

The optional signature area can be used ONLY for The Art of Warfare (TAW) Medal Bar or Rank graphic or Duties graphic (for TAW Members) or 1 line of text (for anyone).

The Rank/Duty graphics limits are as follow:
    Maximum height = 10 pixels
    Maximum width = 150 pixels

For text there can be no line breaks and the amount of characters can not exceed the height limits imposed on the rank/duty graphic.

Section 2: Content and Signature Removal

    TOP
Each member is fully responsible for the content of any forum signatures they use in the TAW forums. If a signature violates the size requirements or is deemed offensive by the COC, the signature can be removed at any time without notice.

Moderators who remove signatures outside of their division will email the Division Commander (DC), Project or Resource Manager (PM/RM) or Division Officer (DO), Project or Resource Assistant (PA/RA) of the violating member's division.
    -----

Also when we update policy an "ALL HANDS" email is sent out to all our members to ensure that everyone knows what changed this way noone can say they did not know.

Wow another regulation. Can't wait. awesome.
This one is undoubtedly about the impact on server load of accumulated copies of the same signature, and thus about the cost of running the forum. No one should complain about the owner trying to cut the cost a little bit. I wouldn't want to cost anyone else any money for my little bit of convenience or personal expression.

Agreed, and put a little more eloquently than my post lol.

People have to remember that while this is a free Forum, unless you CHOOSE to donate, that there are still cost's involved. There is still the consideration of making the Forum software run smoothly, and so on.

Actually, it's not a server load thing. There were two reasons that we were discussing it. The primary reason is that we wanted something clearer than the current policy, which is "Signature size must be appropriate and not distract from the flow of threads." We were starting to see some gargantuan signatures that were starting to make threads really hard to read. My own was just as bad until I took some elements out.

The second is that we wanted a cosmetic difference between site-supporter and non-site-supporter that would provide a value-added incentive to donate to the maintenance of INGO, similar to the expanded PM space and custom descriptions (the bit under your name that says "Plinker").

Unfortunately, I can already tell this is going to turn into the same discussion that followed the one about the classified ads.
