I havent found any new 1911s for under $700, let alone $550. I know you can get used ones around that price. I personally would not get the Taurus. If your're going to get a 1911 and upgrade it then Id stick with a Springfield. Its one of the cheaper 1911s (compared to the Kimber, Para Ordinance, Les Bahr), and its excellent quality. You can do anything to it. The Beretta 92 is a great gun. I used it all throughout my military career and never once had a problem with it. Im actually looking at buy a 92 to add to my collection now.

Why wouldn't you get the Taurus? I'm curious, as it's one of the 1911's I'm considering buying.

There are several below $700. Para GI models sell for around $600-$650 brand new at shows. RIAs sell for less than $500, sometimes $400, brand new. The Taurus 1911 is $600. Remington 1911's at the last Fort Wayne gun show were $500-$600. There are a couple of other cheaper brands that sell new 1911's in the $400-$500 range as well.

The Rock Islands are good guns. I have a compact and am very happy with it. My only complaint is the sights are tough to replace as they don't seem to use any common standard sights. I did mod mine with an extended thumb safety which went in with a little fitting. Most 1911 parts are made a bit big so they can be fitted to each pistol, so that was expected. But my RIA is as accurate as my Kimbers and has been more reliable than my Springfield. In the Springfields defense, it has been absolutely reliable as well after a set of springs.

There are 1911's to be had well under his price range, and definitely below your $700 figure. You must not be looking in the right places. The RIA's for one have a great reputation.

Is anyone know much about the Rock Islands?

I LOVE my RIA GI. It's got about 600 rounds of hardball through it with no hick ups.

I also own a Taurus PT1911 and an older Colt Combat Commander.

For the money, the Rock is a deal.

I changed the sights on mine, (easy DIY), and a few other things, and refinished it, (another DIY).

For a first 1911, I don't think you could go wrong with either a RIA GI or a RIA TAC.

I would personally go with the Beretta 92. The Taurus version of the Beretta is a good gun, but not as good as the original. I would steer you away from a 1911, for several reasons. The number one reason would be the cost of feeding it compared to the 9mm.

But, if you want to practice malfunction drills, the 1911 is the way to go.:):

I really like my RIA .38 Super.
Did have to replace the magazine, but once I did that, it's been 100%

go with the beretta, cheaper to feed, holds higher capacity which is nice for edc and they can be found cheaper than a 1911, usually. Why not look for a used one. theres one in the classifieds right now and im sure if you offered the guy something reasonable, he would probable go for it:whistle:

Nothing wrong with a 1911 or a M9. You just have to decide if you'd rather have 7 or 8 rounds of 45 or 15 - 20 rounds of 9mm. Another thing to consider is who else is going to be shooting the gun? I sold my last 45 for a 9mm when I got married and needed something she could handle as well.

In either case I'd really do my homework before buying a Taurus. I've had two of their revolvers and both had problems so I really hesitate when I see the Taurus name on a gun, but many people also swear by their Taurus guns.

I got rid of my Berretta 92. It wouldn't feed when it was below 20 outside. In that price range, the Springfield GI 1911 is nice.
