As stated, the debate was enlightening. I did like the points made by the Lib. Candidate. Never voted for a Lib. (Thought about Ross before he went full gonzo) But the idea of no prop. taxes was refreshing. I know this will never happen, but something/someone to look at in the future.

The story was on Fox 59. @ 10:00

Don’t get me wrong, I believe all taxes are too high. But if we get rid of property taxes what will the state replace it with? The state’s appetite must be fed. It never misses a meal. If it doesn’t get its fill with the help of property taxes something else must be thrown in its bowl.

I read an article yesterday about the RR trail they’re building in southern IN. It said the project was expected to cost $70,000,000. That (as an example) kind of frivolous spending must be paid for somehow.

I know my conservative Republicans county government just love to spend money. I think even more than the Dem city governments. But they all love working together. Just use my road as an example. They decided it needs to be a 3 lane (center turn lane) and a bike lane. There is no need for a center lane in my section. The only time we have much traffic on this road is for the factories east of me. So it is real busy for an hour or so early morning and then an hour in the afternoon. So the middle turn lane is a wasted expense. For the same reason, we don’t need a bike path. There isn’t a lot,of bike traffic, and they tend to be,out there on the weekend or during off work times, when the road isn’t busy anyway. But I think they get some Fed money for the project so why not.

Speaking of factories. Instead of building in the designated industrial park, one company bought a big parcel of land east of me. Everyone knew it was too low, with swampy areas. But the county okayed it. Guess who is now getting to try to fix the water problems they have…

Read what you wrote again and ask yourself if this is the way it is supposed to be.

Of the answer is no, then **** the state and its taxes until things are brought back to where they should be. If we have to starve it to death then so be it but **** needs to change. I don't believe this country was intended to be populated by people terrified of their government but that's damned sure where we're at. The government isn't going to neuter itself.

Weren't the casinos/gaming supposed to fix revenue problems?
Casinos, gaming, lotteries etc are all taxes on the poor.

The poor waste their money on such things at a much higher clip than the middle class and above.

All with the hope of “hitting it big!”

Redistributing wealth from the poor to the middle class.

I mean didn’t organized crime used to be the ones that ran “numbers?”

I probably understand this better than many others here because I lived most of my life in Illinois. I saw a lot of this type project the state was spending a bunch of taxpayer money on. The state of Illinois was then and still is broke so how can they justify spending millions of dollars on bike trails, tennis courts and other stuff they cannot afford. Politicians that vote for this do so because they have to spend other peoples money or there won't be kickbacks and bribes coming back to them. These politicians have no problem spending millions of taxpayer dollars to get back several hundred thousand in campaign donations. After all it is not like they are spending their own money. Jim.

I strongly disagree with property taxes. Nobody should be in a position where they can lose their house and property because they didn't feed the beast. "Homeownership" is such a farce. You don't actually own your own property. Its wrong.

Never forget our "good guy" Mitch. He signed the bill raising our sales tax by 16%. A tax that none of us can avoid.

A 16% cost increase on all goods that aren't food or service. Compounded over and over and over, because this tax is across the board, reflected by every seller, as their costs went up by this much also. And the seller before them, And the seller before them. Etc, Etc, Etc...

We all agree on this, the real problem becomes just how do you propose property owners pay for the benefits their property receives?

The problem with this is is the state will send men with guns to evict you from your property if you refuse to pay. Most of your neighbors will merely stand by and watch, a few will then go online to bid on your property hoping to pick it up for the cost of the back taxes owed and count themselves fortunate to pick your property on the cheap.

First, let’s carve out the benefits that are only given to property owners. Those that nobody else gets. Let’s then fix the property tax to pay for those services only. Everything else gets paid for by everyone proportionately.

Fully agree. Now, a question, who and how many do not pay property tax?
