I am certain many are all smug about the truck video belching black smoke at the riders but if one goes over the rail and dies this guy is in jail.

For what, accelerating on a grade? It’s not his fault he needs to apply more skinny pedal at different portions of the hill to keep rpm and momentum up?

The driver was deliberately passing close and accelerated to create smoke and fumes aimed at the cyclists. In court skilled plaintiffs attorneys will use a video like that to bankrupt the driver and a prosecutor could run for reelection on it.

Sounds like a Perry Mason episode; I can see the driver breaking down under Perry's hounding: "YOU'RE RIGHT! I DID IT, I DID IT I TELL YA! I was driving up the hill and had to apply more throttle! I didn't mean to apply more throttle but that mean old 4% grade made me do it. I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE! (sobbing quietly now as he's lead off to the chair).

The video clearly showed a minimum of 4 feet of clearance and in places up to 8 to 10 feet of clearance so yeah he was deliberately passing too close. Hell a couple of times he even move away from the edge of the pavement as he approached bicycles so I hope the prosecutor has a second job lined up for after the election.

Not at all points and he blew through a construction zone.

So I was in the netherlands a couple years ago and they had the best system I've ever seen for sharing the road, It's expensive but when your socialist you can do things like this

    https://images.search.yahoo.com/sea...2012/02/dutch-style-junction.jpg&action=click

Each road has 3 paving options, the outside cement is for walking, the next row of brick or cobblestone for bikes, and the center paved lanes for cars.

So until we have roads like this the bicycles should travel at their own risk.

Once the bicycle season warms up I'll download some video of the "courteous" "share the road" cyclists I deal with on a regular basis. Unless of course I don't have something more important to do like count the leaves on the trees out back.

This has really become a VERY entertaining thread. Perhaps one day it too will join the other epic threads such as boner drone, WALLET!, squirt gun, unicorn or any of the others.

Oh yeah, -1 for Burger King.

Agreed, I love biking for exercise, but I don't try to share the road with cars. I average 20 miles 3-4 times a week during warm months. I find a route from my house using sidewalks and full shoulders to a paved path, or else I drive my truck and park somewhere to start. I think it's just a matter of time before I get flattened by someone looking at their phone if i have to get on a road for a little bit. Doesn't matter who's fault it was if I'm dead.

If all you mean is "bicyclists could die," then everyone does everything at their own risk. If you mean that drivers shouldn't be held responsible for sharing the road with others who are legally using the road, I wholeheartedly disagree. Our roads already have a place designated for bicycles: the lane of the road.

I mean a bicycle is at a higher risk on roads without proper shoulders.

I can give you my common routes so you can avoid those roads. The roads like state road 45 are a death trap. You have sharp curves, Foliage right up to the edge of the road, many many distractions along the road, Plus good cell phone coverage so I can be responding to INGO threads as I drink my beer speeding and swerving down brown county roads.

When you get hit by my 78 3/4 Chevy pickup with rust holes that I sharpen to cut brush off the roadsides so I don't have to get out and do any work to my farm lanes and I hit the bicycle, the bicycle will loose the match up every time. If I'm not too drunk and realize that I hit something then I might call 911 on my baby momma's burner cell phone that we normally just set up hook ups on. If I've already thrown that one out so I don't get caught cheatin on my wife and 6 kids, then you might have to lay there till a sheriff's drug drone see's you laying there. Or the buzzards start circling. Don't come running to me crying

This happened on my normal route to work a couple years ago

    https://www.emsworld.com/news/10336788/man-left-lying-ind-field-days-after-motorcycle-crash

BTW, In my driving career I have hit 32 deer, and in fact I just bumped one last week.

Cyclist wonders who left him in the road after hit-and-run

And i guess I'll keep collecting stories of "courteous" drivers and my friends

You win! No way to respond to this without it coming off as "victim blaming". I tend to look at problems and wonder what the solution is, some people look at a problem and look for someone to blame. It all boils down to simple physics, size plays into it, visibility plays into it, courtesy plays into it, awareness plays into it. And as usual two sides unwilling to look at an issue from the other's perspective plays into it.

I'm not from around here so maybe it's different but when, let's say a vehicle, impedes traffic my experience and training tell me to pull over and let the traffic pass and then proceed. I've done it many times while pulling a trailer and I've done it many times while riding a bike. I guess my problem is that I believe that laws, rules, regulations, whatever you want to call them are to be obeyed so when I come across a group of *******s on bicycles, and this group can contain as many as 40 *******s in one instance, and they are actively blocking the road it does get frustrating. Especially when it's a hilly curvy road that has ample pull-offs at regular intervals on a 3 mile stretch marked no passing. My law abiding citizen side makes it difficult for me to ignore the no passing zone. And when you do pass you have all kinds of friendly gestures, words and in some cases water bottles flung at you. So no, while I do consider the cummins vs cyclists video upstream a dickish move I can appreciate the action of said dick driver although in that particular video it was probably more macho coal pouring hero than someone upset with cyclists.

And we do enjoy our two wheel excursions thru the countryside ourselves so these aren't the words of a blind 4 wheeler.

You seem to be taking this lightly. People in their cages driving unsafely are the source of the danger. They are dangerous to all of us. You seem fixated on the danger being extreme for bicyclists. Yes, bicyclists are more likely to be seriously injured in a collision with a car than are people in another car. But the solution is to stop collisions, not to scold bicyclists as though they are the source of the problem.

And here's the thing: I haven't owned a bicycle for close to 20 years. It's not me. I won't be out there riding.

But I still think it's ridiculous how many "freedom-loving" INGO members are quick to tell someone else that they can't choose for themselves what hobbies to take up and what self-risks are unacceptable.

So? How is this relevant to a bicycle discussion?

BTW, In my driving career I have hit 32 deer, and in fact I just bumped one last week.

I am now legitimately afraid to be on the road anywhere near you, no matter what I'm driving. Not sure if that was your goal, but I now think that you are a bad driver.

My only problem with road cyclists is when they refuse to let motorists pass. What is the issue with moving over (when safe to do so) and letting faster moving traffic pass? :dunno: In all the bickering, I’ve yet to see an answer to this.

They are just as entitled to the road as you are, why should they move? Purple as necessary.
