Does anyone remember the last very old actor turned president nearly bankrupted the country believing the movie 'Star Wars' was real?

Is anyone else bothered by the fact weapons in space are illegal by international treaty?
Is anyone else bothered by the fact the US Air Force has a space division?
And civilian non-military space division exists, it's called NASA...
Dunno. It still has to be funded, etc. I agree with Sec. Mattis. Put it under USAF like the USMC is to the USN.
Makes a lot more sense logistically, IMO, then a new branch from scratch. If it eventually becomes needed, detach it like the USAF was from the Army.

No, but I remember an old actor turned president who used the Strategic Defense Initiative to try to counter the "suicide pact" of Mutual Assured Destruction, greatly advanced science and technology in the realms of physics and computers, and won the Cold War. The media tagged it "Star Wars" because why not?
Not to clarify with actual facts, but space based weapons are not only banned under intonational treaty, but considered war crimes.

I remember when SDI was announced and the deluge of derision mixed with fear mongering poured on it by big media. To this day I think it was a calculated move by Regan or somebody working for him to provide a big chip at a USSR summit and in that respect it performed well.

I remember a lecture about the SDI when I was in ROTC back in 1983. The slides still referred to it as "High Frontiers" and I remember thinking even then that if they manage 5% of it, it's going to be very cool in terms of spinoff and related tech.
My favorite part was "Brilliant Pebbles," which was essentially a high tech shotgun.
We received an NBC lecture at the same time, which was less fun and downright disturbing. The "Yellow Rain" the Soviets used in Afghanistan was not a good thing.
During the Geneva summit in 1985 SDI was at the top of Gorbachev's list and a lot came out of that summit as far as relations between Regan and Gorbachev. When you think about it, SDI just fades away with the USSR. Some people sell President Regan short, but I think he did an excellent job of closing out the cold war, something that had haunted my generation all our lives.
"To give substance to this doctrine and ensure the development and reinforcement of our space capabilities, a space command will be created next September in the air force," Macron said, adding that it would later become the Space and Air Force.
