I've been there and done that. I setup and maintain alot of computers for people. The best anti-virus I've found is ESET NOD32. For malware I use Malwarebytes. Firewall I use my broadband router and plain ol' windows 7 firewall.

I just use Avast Anti-virus. Its more of virus prevention than virus detection. It usually catches and stops various websites from trying to run and install things on your machine instead of just detecting them after they do.

    Oh, and its Free!

This is what i use personally Vipre & also what I sell to business & residential customers. If infection gets through you can contact tech support & they will remove for you.
1-3 year maint. & 1 to unlimited computers for home use. built from the ground up. scans are fast & low resource usage.

if you haven't removed it, we can try remote access & I can see what I can do for you.

These two for cleanups when someone gets adware/malware/trojans,etc:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Spybot - Search & Destroy - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

    Download, Update, Scan.

My personal computer remains virus, malware, etc clean for years now, however I use these tools to clean up others computers when they screw them up. Does the job perfect 99/100 times!

The computer I'm on now has never had a virus and for about 6 months I used NO protection. I wasn't being extra careful about anything but I don't download attachments, I don't surf questionable websites, and I don't open emails from people I don't know. I've ran nod32, several different symantec products, avast(hated it) but when I do have some protection I ALWAYS have malwarebytes...always, always, always.

    In combination, I use:

    Zone Alarm free firewall
    Avira free anti-virus
    Avira Anti-Root Kit tool...free
TrendMicro Housecall free online virus scanner
TrendMicro CWShredder...free scanner for the CoolWebSearch hijacker programs.
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software...free
    Spybot Search & Destroy anti-malware software...free

My computer is a 10 year old Dell Dimension 4550 running Windows XP Professional

Guess who doesn't have any virus/malware problems? (at least any more...)

My parents use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. They haven't had any problems with it. They had a lot of problems with Norton before that.

No antivirus or malware software is 100% effective. I've cleaned several computers with the "Antivirus Suite" type trojans with antivirus ranging from Avast, Norton, McAffee, Trend, Webroot, and AVG.

I always use Eset's online scanner as a secondary check on any system I'm working on.

I've run Ubuntu for 3 years now and love it. I get a chuckle out of viruses trying to infect me. :)

I've found Norton and McAfee to be the worst of the virus programs.

I've had good luck with AVG for those Windows computers I have to support.

    So ive downloaded
    malwarebytes
    and AVG

I wrecked my brains trying to figure out whats better AVG or Avira?

so should I change to Avira, seems AVG got a better rating on Cnet than Avira:dunno:

Most your replies have been very helpfull. Thanks INGO
