Let's say I know a gun guy who is turning 45 in a few months and was thinking of a fun present for himself. Who makes a great quality 1911 that would would be one smooth as silk actions to work and accurate as anyone could ever hope for. Full disclosure, I'm not a 1911 guru or really follow that world because it's a different world. In the past I really used to like the Dan Wesson Specialist in the distressed finish, but I am way too late to the party on that one and they're no longer made. I've got a Springfield 1911 Loaded and it's been a great pistol for me, but it's definitely not in the ballpark of what I'm looking for in terms of smooth action or features. This pistol wouldn't be a safe queen and would likely run through pistol courses and maybe a competition or two. I'm not opposed to going custom.

    What do you recommend.

What's the budget because you won't get "ball bearing smooth" for less than 2.5K IMHO

    Correct.

I have had AllenM work on a couple of 1911s for me. I am happy with them.

Nighthawk, Les Baer, Wilson Combat would be my first stops for semi custom guns to meet your needs.

For a great out-of-the-box experience, Springfield TRP is a good value at ~$1500.

If that’s not good enough for you, AllenM can do his magic on it.

Mine is all stainless in a matte finish.

    Product Details
The Pilot Mountain Arms Operator Model 1911 is a professional grade, fully accurized .45 caliber pistol with trigger and action (reliability) job. This pistol is modeled after the 1911 pistols that Sergeant Major Brian Searcy carried during his service with 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta and is built using the same quality components. The extended beaver tail grip safety and commander style hammer reduce hammer bite and wear on the shooter. The adjustable Bomar style night sights allow the shooter to adjust the point of impact with a variety of ammunition. The rear sight cut is set slightly forward into the interior of the slide to protect the rear blade. This pistol has the accuracy and reliability to be used as an offensive handgun. It’s built specifically for professionals whose life depends on quickly eliminating threats. Gun will shoot 3” or less at 50 yards. *Photos may include features and/or upgrades not included in the base price.

I have been impressed with the TRPs I have shot. I would consider purchasing one if the opportunity presented itself.
