.223 tikka mags have an overall length for cartridges about 2.30. haevier bullets hand loaded exceed this length. they will not fit into the magazine and have to be single loaded. the top of the mag drops the cartridge off to the side not allowing the bullet to work on the feed ramp. the aftermarket follower makes the single loaded cartridge feed properly.
tikka are based on a long action with the different caliber magazines having the same outside dimensions. the magazines are formed with an internal block at the back. some have modified the back, cutting it and refilling it with various things allowing longer than 2.30 oal cartridges to be loaded. another option i have heard is to buy a .308 mag and use it to single load .223.
a .308 mag will let the .223 fall between the retaining lips and feed properly. i have not tried this or seen it in action, don't know for sure if this works. tikka mags are in the 55-70 range so thats not really cost effective to try.
would be glad to post pics of the inside of the mag for any ideas on modding it.
the people claiming to have modded thier mags have not posted pics of thier work.
