My experience has been that the older, er I mean more experienced officers are usually ok on duty and regular guys off duty. Some of the younger ones are a little too full of themselves. Being a LEO is not a license to be a jerk. The ones that remember most people are just trying to make an honest living and go home at the end of the day have less attitude. I have had friends in all levels of law enforcement so I try to give as much respect as I receive and not go out of my way to give LEO a hard time.

I wish I had more positive things to say about my local department. I have met a couple really good guys in uniform, sadly too many bad ones and apparently the thin blue line is more important than friendship.

Every LEO in Noblesville I've encountered has been nothing but courteous and professional. In fact, the wife and I saw two of them eating dinner one night and we went ahead and picked up their tab. The act of kindness was really appreciated by them.

I've had nothing but good interactions with Johnson County Sheriffs in the several chances I've had to interact with them. To a man (and one woman), they've been top notch and professional. This has been through a couple of calls in the night, several to do VIN checks and one traffic stop.

I'm sure that there are officers that are on the police force for the wrong reasons, but to date, I've had the good fortune to not run into any while they were working in an official capacity. My feelings towards the police? I appreciate what they do, and am thankful for the ones that do it well. I also appreciate that they are doing a job and that they have no obligation to risk their lives to save mine or my families. To that end, I am fully aware that my families safety is my responsibility, not theirs.

The only "negative" interactions would be with officer Jason Bockting with IMPD who walked up to my car on a traffic stop, opened my door, and invited his head and shoulders into my car. I thought it was strange at the time, but didn't say anything to him. I just get weirded out each time I think about it :D

Hamilton County SD, I was at work, but not dressed up, and not on the clock. We have one parking spot that is next to the Handicapped spots, but closer to the building. Mostly people use it because they need to run in real quick and leave.

Well I parked there and went inside to look at the schedule, etc. On my way out I was approached by two deputies who asked me if that was my car. I said yes, and they asked if I was disabled. I said no, but I work here and I know handicapped spots are BLUE and that is not blue, nor is it marked as handicapped. He started saying something about how it's easier for handicapped people to park there, since it's even closer, etc, etc. But if I was right, then I'm free to go.
I wish I wasn't at work, otherwise I would have said something smart in return. Like, what do you mean, if I am right? If I am wrong then try to write me a ticket for it!
Next time, work or not, I'm going to try out that " Am I being detained " thing just to have some fun.

Mostly good interactions overall, I did shadow the Carmel Police Department, and it's pretty darn amazing. I would like to do an Internship there soon.
We live out of city limits, so the Hamilton County Sheriffs Department does our calls. I like how they sit across the street facing our house all the time, because we live across from a graveyard and they park there to get speeders. So, keeps the bad guys away from our house.
Cops are just like anyone else, most are great, and a few might be bad, or might be having a bad day, and have an attitude. But, so do all of us at times!

First, Thanks for wearing the Badge! Second, May God Bless you and keep you safe! Now for your question, I have only good things to say about LEO's. I'm a Ride Captain for the Patriot Guard Riders (as well a Senior Chaplain) and we rely on the support all the LEO's give us with Traffic control, Escorts Ect. We attend the funerals of Fallen Soldiers, Veterans and First Responders. We're all in this together!

The only problem I ever have with LEOs is once that are cocky and think they are all that when they obviously eat donuts all day. Under trained over weight cops is the only thing I have ever had against them but other than that. My highschool football coach is a Lt. for Fishers PD so i know plenty of cops and like most of them :)

I had a Honda cbr1000. As I pulled onto the construction zone 1 lane express way,I was followed for 15 min. Pulled over for Intoxication at 10am. I explained that the road had been milled which causes motorcycles to drift unpredictably. Not finding anything, they asked to search my duffle bags. Told them it took me long to pack, and I'd rather he didn't. He said take a seat. I did. He unloaded all my clothing, bvd's, onto the side of the freeway. Told me to not swerve and look suspicious when I'm being followed. He left me there on the side of the road to repack. Oh, he removed the seat from the bike, a bit tricky to reinstall. Obviously, he thought I was some weed smoking prep-hippie.

But that is the worst, and if you judge every LEO by one bad stop, I'd say that reflects on my character. I must say the many warnings surely make up for that.

After 70 years my opinion never varies. They are humans with the same flaws as any other human on this planet. They also have one of the most difficult jobs in the country. It is dangerous and way under compensated. For the most part they have proven to be more patient and understanding than most people I know. The older I get the more I appreciate their patience. LOL

From reading past posts...Im getting alot of mixed reviews in regards to cops. As a LEO of 8 years, Im curious on what you think of your cops, what they do good, and what they could improve upon. How did they treat you and where you happy or unhappy with the end result of your contact.

In the Marines...its never just Sgt. So & So, it was always, "US Marine throws puppy off bridge" So I get that it only takes one experience to ruin it for the rest of them...No question, off duty, some of my personal experiences havnt been that great at times...

Was curious on some of INGOs experiences and what youd like to see improved upon...

For the record...in 1200 traffic stops, Ive only written 3 citations...so take it easy on me. I think tickets do much more harm to families then good...just wanted to get that out there :)
1200 traffic stops? Did you check their papers?

For the most part, the LEOs I've encountered have been professional. However, there are glaring exceptions.

I have interacted with ISP, Hendricks County Sheriff, Plainfield PD, and IMPD. All have been due to moving traffic violations or accidents. ISP has always come across as been very professional followed by Hendricks Co. Plainfield PD has always been laid back (for us residents) and forgiving.

IMPD is another story. Every interaction with them has been a poor one. They have always come across as condescending, egotistical, and full of sh*t. Due to these encounters, I have learned to have little respect for them.

I don't believe my encounters were negative with Marion Co. Sherriff until they were merged with Indy PD.

Anyone else see a violation of the 4th amendment?

First, the fact that you would post this is indicaative that you are focused on doing quality work. As long as this is the case, you should be just fine. Unless you are in a leadership position, there is probably little you can do about the general effect that law enforcement has on the rest of us. The biggest contributing element to all getting tarred with the same brush is that in practice it is a very unequal relationship between the LEO and any member of 'everyone else' and it takes only one undesirable representative to make just plain miserable--a fact that is taken to heart by those of us with more bad experiences than good. In fairness, I have lived in one community with an excellent PD. The officers were some of the finest people you could ever meet and were very efficient and ethical in carrying out their duties. I have also lived in a community in which the police were the most active and dangerous criminal group in the community. Others in my experience have fallen in between the two, usually without a lot to positively recommend them, although I have encountered other very good examples of the profession. Unfortunately, they have not been a majority. For safety's sake, I feel compelled to take a 'guilty until proven innocent' approach given that erring the other way can be troublesome to say the least, again with the unequal relationship being a major factor.

In the end, be who you are, and from what I interpret from your post, you should not have anything to worry about. My only admonition is to remember that when you encounter people who are, well, not exactly cordial, they may well have some really bad experiences behind them. I would prefer to think that even those people would be influenced by showing enough humanity to counter the images of being either corrupt by virtue of profession or else being a police state automaton without overdoing it to the point of compromising your position of being taken seriously. In the end, be righteous and it will all work out, perhaps with the exceptions of criminals and those who won't credit a LEO with being able to be right/honest even when declaring the time. Be safe and be well!

I drive for a living.. Had a cop while giving me a warning for speeding ask me how I got so many warnings, explained by job had me driving a lot. He told me be careful as he was sure my next traffic stop would be a ticket. I'm always cordial and polite. Turn off car, turn on dome light and place hands in readily seen location. I figure anything that allows an officer to relax, is going to give me benefit of doubt when he deciding warning or ticket.

I like comment about older officers versus younger ones. Knowing an older officer well. Makes me remember a quote I was once told by an officer. I give everybody the benefit of doubt, cause I'm bound to see and catch you doing it again otherwise.

Also, agree there shouldn't be any unmarked cop cars at all, including detectives and brass. If you can't catch someone breaking the law while driving a marked car, maybe that's because your presence prevented the crime??

Back on subject, have had very few problems with police. I wanted to be one for sometime, but I make more money than my friend who's a LT with a family and I work less. Of course that doesn't take into effect perks/benefits, car and discounts.

I have worked with every Law Enforcement agency in the State. I worked for the largest radio communications vendor. Most 90% are real good guys who only want to do a very tough job. And they do it well.
Unfortunality there are some butt heads who watch too much TV or something like that and feel that their job is so tough that people should cater to them and shower them with free stuff.

Every LEO I know and have been stopped by have been great. I've heard a couple stories from my friends about New Haven PD that were quite unpleasant but nothing over the top. Couple customers of my dad's and friends of mine are LEO's and they're really awesome people, no complaints from me about FWPD.
