It seems like every other time I go purchase a firearm I get delayed. Twice this year so far. Last year I bought several guns no delay. What a joke. Earlier this year my stepdad sent me a pistol and the FFL told me it was delayed then a week later denied. I called the FBI or who ever they call and talked to a nice lady on the phone. She told me she couldn't tell me why I had been denied but she did listen to me. She said let me check on this. Before I left the parking lot the FFL called me and said something weird happened. I was like great what a warrant for my arrest he said no you are cleared. I went back and he told me he had never heard of anyone being delayed then approved. WHAT GIVES!!!!!!

Do you have a fairly common name (I.e. John Smith)? I have heard of folks that share the same name as a known felon in a similar geographic area having slower approval times if they don't use their SSN. I am sure some of the guys that work at local shops could chime in here with their personal experience to see if this is common.

They do live in a dictatorship

Make the list as long as you like, I still think they owe you a reason for denial. It's way to easy for government agencies to hide behind "sensitive" or "classified" information. Hate to see us move in the direction of that list and we certainly are moving in that direction.

it ain't that deep....you are not on a "list".
they won't give you the reason because they have no way to verify who they are giving that info to. they can't risk giving personal info out to anyone claiming to be you.

Can't make the list any longer, that's all there is, currently.

In your opinion we may be heading in that direction, but we sure have a long way to go yet at this time.

Regarding the OP's problem, I'd guess its the name. But that is only a guess.

So if you ID yourself they'll give you the reason? I haven't had the problem so far but I haven't heard anyone being given a reason yet either. Could be I just haven't heard about it.

I have had a man delayed and then the NICS operator called back within a few minutes. It happens, and you are right, they refuse to give any reason.

Really? You would want the FBI telling some random retail salesperson all about the stupid or nasty **** you might've done in your past in order to get flagged in the system? :dunno:

Providing information on convictions, restraining orders, identity theft/confusion, etc. to a third party (the salesperson) would constitute an invasion of (your) privacy, so they don't do it. Likewise, as VUPDblue stated, they wouldn't provide it to the OP over the phone because they had no way of verifying who he was. That's why, when you appeal a NICS denial, you have to request it in writing, using the transaction number generated during the background check.

I went back and he told me he had never heard of anyone being delayed then approved.

This happens all the time. Did you mean "denied then approved"? That has happened, too, but it is not very common and it usually takes them longer to realize their error.

Like stated a couple times I would guess it is a name problem. I haven't ran into any delays/problems any time I have bought a weapon. Sorry to hear about the problem for you.

To find out why, you have to fill out some paperwork, then send it to them. I can't remember if it's online or us mail. Then you will get something in the mail in about 2 weeks telling you why. After that, more paper work if you want to protest it and that will take 6-9 months.

I got my first DELAYED today. Pissed me off. :xmad: But I have a very common First and Last name. I provided my SSN# but that didn't matter. I always get sent to farther review. Im waiting patiently for the LGS to call me. I sold all my guns over the past couple weeks and am gunless till they call me. :(
