I've had a few 700's over the years. The one I miss most is a 700pss. Loved that gun. I like the savages and the fact that it's pretty easy to change it to a different caliber later one is a great option too.

I'll throw out another rifle. T/C Venture. It is a good solid rifle and accurate right out of the box. I have a T/C Venture in 243 and I'm amazed at how accurate and smooth it is. Especially for a sub $500 rifle. Add rings and glass and you're well under the $1000 threshold.

I've got a dpms sportical. I think they sell for around $800. They are basically a civilianized ar. It comes with a flat top upper and the gas block has a picatinny rail instead of a sight. The one thing I would change right away is the rear collapsible stock, it sucks. Other than that, it's a great gun and shoots really well.

My ptr-91 is my favorite rifle to shoot. Hard to explain but its just fun and I can shoot it very accurately with iron sights. HK91 for 1/4 the price but the same or better quality. Probably better rifles to scope/hunt though.
