    Why do I carry?

Well, if I do need it, it won't do me much good at home in the safe...

    Scared? Too bad.
Your fears don't trump my rights!

I will "probably" never need to use it, but if I do I am prepared.

Never needed a fire extinguisher, yet I have several.

Rarely need my spare tire, yet all vehicles have one.

Only occasionally need a band-aid, but I have several first aid kits.

My smoke detectors only go off when my wife cooks - never had a fire - yet I have them all over the house.

I have not yet encountered someone that needs shot, but I carry anyway.

The list goes on, and on, and on......

Some good one's in these lists...

People pay for firefighters to train + sit around all day 'in-case' they're needed!

Police officers go to school + receive recurring training so they can respond to an emergency (ex: someone who is in the process of breaking the law...B&E...armed robbery...assault...basic criminal activity)!

Medical personnel (EMT's, Paramedics, RN's, Dr's, etc.) all receive years of training + recurring training to stay current with techniques & skills...so they're prepared to deal with anything that calls them!

So much could be put on this list!

    - Most people don't have one and they wouldn't know how to use it anyways.

Rarely need my spare tire, yet all vehicles have one.
    - Most people could not change a tire if they had to and I doubt they have ever checked the air pressure in their spare.

Only occasionally need a band-aid, but I have several first aid kits.
    - They usually only need a Band-Aid for when their feelings get hurt.

My smoke detectors only go off when my wife cooks - never had a fire - yet I have them all over the house.
    - Lots of people steal the batteries out of their smoke detectors because they need them for some important electronic toy.

I have not yet encountered someone that needs shot, but I carry anyway.
    - I have encountered lots of people I wanted to shoot.

...which does absolutely nothing to help people to understand and accept firearms. If anything, it just stokes their "anti" resolve.

    Correct.
But at a certain point, when you've shot down all their logic, and they just keep coming up with emotion, you throw it out.

    Where's the bacon?
I have to be honest: I never check the air pressure in my spare tire, however, I do carry a 12V DC air compressor in my car.

Also, I have met lots of people that need a good, solid Gibbs-smack, but I can't think of anyone I've met that I honestly think needs to be shot. (Full disclosure: I never met the mope that broke into my apartment some 20-odd years ago. (gump) And that's all I got to say about that.(/gump)

I tell them to watch the news and they will understand. I then ask them why they don't. Then I add that they can call 911 and the police are only minutes away when seconds are what that count.

The rebuttal people will use to the "I have a fire extinguisher, smoke detector, etc that I will likely never need" is those items are not as likely to hurt someone. Granted, this is true. However, you have a right to carry a gun, and when done so responsibly there is little to no chance of it hurting anyone.

Just explain to them that you carry to prevent yourself and others from being hurt or killed.

I carry because, like fire insurance, the chances I'll need it are slim, but the consequences of not having it if I did need it are catastrophic. It's actually more important than fire insurance. Without fire insurance, you lose stuff. Without a means to protect yourself and others, lives can be lost.

I always respond with the statement " I am the security manager for a very important local family". That usually helps them to understand. They still may not agree with it but as was said before, "your fear does not negate my rights or responsibility"
