It apparently doesn't take ghost-like stealth to get close to the alert and wily "wild" bison.

No, it doesn't. They're not afraid of humans at all. I had a group of 15+ at Badlands National Park that ran past the car so close I probably could have touched a couple out the window. I was actually afraid one was going to run into the car and destroy it.
