    Don't know the full story, but per this article at NPR, Afghans of the time liked music by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Tom Jones.

    Afghanistan of the 1950s-1960s was a comparatively modern place. If you look at other pictures from the period, you will see other signs in English as well, women working outside the home, not wearing burkas, and interacting with men socially and at work.

    You'd have to be a Tennessee Volunteers fan to recognize the guy in this photo. The photo came across my Facebook feed yesterday and it depicts Coach Neyland in front of a gate to UT's (now) Neyland Stadium holding a gun. I suspect then as now, it was a publicity photo of a "protect this house" meme. Even though Coach Neyland was responsible for putting UT on the college football map, if he were to do this now, he'd likely be summarily fired. Times have indeed changed...
