Excuse me, who ever said it was illegal to spank your kids? Privately or Publicly? It's not illegal.

They can snort snot rockets at me for all I care. If my son or daughter needs a good arse whoopin, by God, they're gonna get it! They got it in Bradis the other day for touching the ammo on the shelves! :):

I also agree about the muffler thing. If ya don't like the noise, get some ear plugs! Just another place where gooberment has no business being.

We need to repeal laws, not add more!

Savage I am with ya man, anywhere mine need it they get it, home, pulic I care not... some lib wants to get mouthy they get it tooo :D

Wait what does loud exhaust have to do with being grown up and also I think if you look you will find alot of places already have these laws or ordinances in place. I know Bloomington does and so does Nashville, heck you aren't even allowed to use a jake brake when you are coming down the hill in to French Lick. So I say leave that one alone and maybe think of something you do that maybe I or others think you are immature for doing. Dunno who cares I am nobody

    # ...ought to be pulled over and fined for excessive noise if the muffler-system has been altered to make it louder.
I like this idea and I also see it as a problem but would include other things that makes excessive noise such as radios.
I don't think I should need to wear ear plugs while I'm driving to protect my hearing (its dangerous for one thing) or be woke(or my kids) in the middle of the night (or day for those that work nights) just because someone likes the noise as they drive around. Some people don't move over for emergency vehicles because they cant hear them. Never did understand the "need" for that :dunno: .

Raise the sales tax slightly and pump all the revenue into teacher salaries, resources for public schools, mentor programs, etc. That would be a great first step to solve dozens of other problems, though certainly it all starts with the parents. Obviously no one cannot force them to raise their children a particular way. Nationally they need to toss No Child Left Behind and go to a merit based system for teachers. Toss tenure and all the ridiculous paperwork they have to deal with and get back to personal teaching to the student and not teaching to the test.

Pursuit of Happiness comes to mind. Make a local ordinance about. Not a state law. Not their place. Same with smoking bans. Especially in my own car.

Seriously, I don't like that people put obama stickers on their cars, or that they paint them hot pink with white spots, but you don't see me trying to make it illegal.

Can you imagine how many laws we'd have if we legislated away everything that offended us.... Oh wait... We're already half way there...

Pat, Joe : Sounds like you fellas have been drinking the authoritarian kool-aid. We should be asking the government what the "Need of something is" not private citizens. If you are unhappy about you bearing more of the tax burden than someone else, get the laws changed so that no one is bearing more of it than another, or more than they are willing to pay.

Deciding that just because you don't like something that there should be a law against it is well, UnAmerican. It goes against the very idea that we were founded on. It does jive however with the political current of the last few hundred years, and is the reason for the mess we are in now.

As far as the Casinos, the request to lessen their tax burden is understandable after you find out how much they got screwed for their gaming licenses. Those places are getting ripped off worse than you are.

"Pursuit of Happiness comes to mind." Yep, that coin has 2 sides.

If you don't see a certain amount of risk in not being able to hear your surrounding while on the road, what can I say?
Also, the thought of calling the cops for noise problems (like barking dogs, loud parties or whatever) may have never entered your minds. Ive thought about it but have never done it. How is this any different though?

    Now thats a first.

bearing more of the tax burden than someone else?
    What are you getting at?

My issue was an issue of noise? Maybe your saying that because there are more important issues to solve the world should stand still. If thats the case, most of the opinions mentioned in this thread are in the same boat. Maybe you should call them Unamerican to.

Deciding that just because you don't like something that there should be a law against it is well, UnAmerican.

There is a great many things I don't like that have laws against them. I don't like it when people are murdered, raped or robbed. I also don't like it when people lose there jobs to foreign countries and try to take away my rights like to bear arms or freedom of speech. Boy, I must really be well, UNAMERICAN :):.

I liked the base of the idea Pat had, plain and simple.

    Un American? :)::)::):

 That's what I said. No one said anything about federal here.

Also, how dare anyone try to tell me how loud I can play my music or how loud my car can be.

Again, I shouldn't have to repeat this, but, if you make a law or an ordinance against every little thing you dislike, how many freedoms are you willing to sacrifice on behalf of others who don't like things you do? Say the state becomes IL and bans carrying guns? Oh but that's not right, is it? Just as I feel no one has the right to tell me how to drive my car, i.e. Breathilizers in the car, seat belt laws, cellphone laws, etc, they have no right telling me how to live my life or what I can or cannot do to my own property.

    State local or otherwise.

The single most important thing we can ask that our State lawmakers do is to propose and support 10th Amendment solutions to counter the intrusive activity of the Federal Government.

We need to counter "Cap & Trade," the National Health Care Reform bill, the Stimulus spending spree, impending federal gun restrictions, etc.

No new bans. Repeal some of the old ones and make us more free. NO tax increases. Balanced budgets.

I see the risk in it when maybe you don't.
Why should peoples lives stop for someone who wants to make excess noise?
Why should a teacher in classroom of kids have to stop her lesson (for however long) because someone (if for no other productive reason) likes the cause if the interruption? We do have the right to be asses don't we (by this I don't mean you personally). Is it OK with you if I drive in circles around your kids school all day and your house all night on a very loud bike revving the engine? Hey I enjoy those 2 roads.

This is way I see the base of our disagreement on this matter (it may help you with my point of view).
If your noise is causing .000,000,001% of hearing damage to me, interrupting my pursuit of happiness or slowing down an emergency vehicle for 1/2 of a second (because they couldn't hear to get out the way) on its way to my house, you do not have that "right". If you do something that is unsafe to anyone else in any way, I'm OK with a law against it.
    It all comes down to..
You see it as my dislike, I see it as is what your doing safe to me and mine.

If you want to continue the debate, with your permission, I'll PM you with any more responses. This is getting close to a thread-jack.

    Define "native", and "fun."

The so-called native-American "indians" to whom I refer are NOT the true aboriginal "indians" Chris Columbus expected to find; the ones here-abouts now (still trying to prove that they are "native indians") simply warred with and killed off the ones who originally lived on the land they wanted. Prehistoric archeological searches have proven this, -beyond the shadow of a doubt. Modern surviving indians killed for and took away land from the real original indians. Just as we have done to them. Sob-sob. Ever heard of Aztlan?? Well, you will. And the oldest human evidence in the U.S. sub-continent is in the Appalachians, where North-European-characteristics skeletons have been found, along with iron-smelters, pig-iron ingots, iron daggers and spear-points. "Indians" have NEVER discovered how to make iron. Columbus discovered survivors, not natives. As for your adolescent fun by supposedly mature adults, I don't want to stop your fun. REPEAT: I DO NOT WANT TO STOP YOUR FUN. Simply obey the law or pay the fine. Like in speeding. "PotatoPotatoPotato" yer 4$$. Your comment proves my point. (And so will your next comment.) And, "LevelJoe", I see it both ways, "Conflict is the root of civilization; civilization is the root of conflict."

Pre-empt gun prohibitions on state college/university campuses!! Other states have done this with NO ill effects. No, "what if-ing," involved. Slam dunk.

Also, to you folks who want to move toward a no-license system like Vermont or Alaska. Remember no license = no reciprocity with other states (since there wouldn't be any "license" to recognize).

So, unless such a system included an optional token piece of paper for other states to also recognize, I could not support it for this reason (as much as I agree with the sentiment and philosophy behind it being a right and not a privilege, which I do).

Unfortunately - They now call it abuse no matter how hard you strike or where you strike. After all, abuse is why the jails are full according to the experts and bleedy hearts. When my wife was babysitting, I have even had a parent tell my wife that she is not to tell her child 'NO' as this is negetive and could be harmful to her BRATs' emotions. Welcome to the liberal way of thinking.
I personally think every kid out there needs a good swat on their bottom every now and then to let them know when they are bad.

That's why I couldn't start a day care. I'll tell another person's kids no all I want when it comes to them interacting in a "negitive" way with me or my family or I see them about the hurt themselves by climbing on the bike racks at Walmart. If the parent has a problem with that, TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR KID!

I'd never lay a hand on someone else's kid though. Not without permission that is. :):

No, spanking is NOT illegal. CPS can't do anything about you whoopin your kid as long as you're not leaving a mark. When asked to clarify, if you bruise them on a constant basis from whooping them then you are abusing them.

CONSTANT BASIS. Key words. Basicilly if you are whooping them for every little thing, that's abuse. They also frown highly on smacking in the face.

On a state level, I would like to see them reevalute concrete road surfaces and the return of some rural roads (heck I live on one) to gravel. Concrete is a bit more expensive at the outset, but in the long run it is a lot cheaper. I personally prefer the paved roads, but we have got to think about costs and what we can really maintain.

I think looking at the roads would be a good start.

I also would like to see work in the area of decentralizing schools. Perhaps a few test areas. Once upon a time it was cheaper to centralize, but I think the penalties may be outweighing the benefits in some areas.

Carry on campus, As a student I wanted it, now as an adjunct instructor for ivytech I really do,

get rid of the seat belt laws, make most speed limits suggestions instead of fines

get rid of liscens plates and registration, plates may be an issue in other states, but the cost of vehicle registration is assinaine, and does nothing that a vin number and notorized bill of sale couldn't due, one copy in a car, one in a safe at home or safe deposit box, notorize all sales and its no issue,

automatic knives, and pull a Montana style fireamrms bill,

work on trimming the budget and taxes overall.

I want to change our Election Elgibility Laws. STOP POLITICIANS for making it a career. Our Forefathers never meant it to be that. Four terms for a Congressman and two terms for a Senator. If it is good enough for our Country's Highest Office, it is good enough for the Lower Offices. This goes for all State Offices also. This is what I would want CHANGED!!

First of all, I'd like to see an understanding by our state legislators that the power entrusted upon the federal government has been awarded to them via the state's permission. Therefore, we need to reaffirm the state's rights (10th Amendment), and hold strong to our midwest family values and morally structured lives.

Along with the fair tax idea, we should abolish the state income tax and property tax all together. It's a simple user fee, or sales tax approach. And speaking of unjustified taxation; why does everyone else in the state, or the Indianapolis surrounding area at the very least, have to cover the poor business decisions of major sporting teams from Indianapolis? If they still owe ten more years on a building that no longer exists (Hoosier Dome), then how do they get the approval for a new stadium, and then strap hundreds of thousands of citizens (many of which will never use the new facility) with a new tax? Shouldn't the multimillion dollar players, coaches, owners, corporate suite holders, and vendors pay the user tax for such a cause? While I'm complaining about the new Lucas Oil Stain Stadium, how can anyone get approval for a building which will hold seventy thousand people, yet only accommodate parking for about two thousand?

On a personal note, I believe that any US highway that runs through any city in Indiana should be allowed a maximum of two stops lights per town. Hello Kokomo, can you hear me? They've been allowed to hijack a highway, and I'm betting it could all be traced back to lobbyist kickbacks.

Keeping with the personal gripes, here's a strange proposal: how about a suspension of all road construction projects involving interstate travel around the Indianapolis area during the months of May and August?
*Here's a great idea: invite over a half million people to your city, and then give them all one lane in which to travel to the same destination. Brilliant!

And finally, Indiana should lead the way in making the Super Bowl weekend a national holiday. Everything should be closed the following Monday, and everyone gets the day off. Be honest here, even though many do not watch or follow professional football, those same many will travel to some sort of Super Bowl party and enjoy the fellowship and commercials.

Great thread and lots of great ideas. Now let's see if we can keep Indiana on the leading edge of fiscal responsibility while continuing to increase our manufacturing capabilities. Hello, can you hear me Harley-Davidson?
