    They are not railroad spikes, found near a barn

    I can't gather the size with nothing to compare it to, but I do have a few guesses. Maybe very old gate hooks/pins, or maybe just bolts/nails. Again, can't tell what size they are, but I've seen similar things before back at home.

    all I have is the picture from a friend... so I can't help you with that either.. I'll pass on those suggestions though

    I'll bet they are just Beam Spikes. My Dad's Barn used to have a post & beam frame. Most of the beams had wooden pegs holding them together, but some beams around the edges had metal spikes like those where the beams intersected.

    was there an anvil in the barn? They look like a pair of anvil inserts for blacksmith work. the long shaft would go in the hole in the anvil and the head would be used to form the hot metal. I'll see if I can find a representative photo.
