    Had one go by south of the house in the 90s, watched it approach, you're right they make an awful noise. The ripping roaring, sort of like a vacuum coater running at really high volume.

    I've heard of people eating puffballs, but have never tried them. We eat mostly morel and chanterelle mushrooms.

    I wouldn't have guessed they were edible. I had one a couple of years ago, and I thought the grandkids had left a soccer ball out. They get big!
