People try to lay blame on the Captain, or the Navy. The Navy because no one noticed it was gone.
The problems was one of the torps knocked out all comms, instantly. There was no chance to call anyone for help.
The navy did not tell ports that warship were arriving, because of secrecy. So the port couldn't notice they were late.
Most men made it to the water.
    But many were injured.
Over 5 or so days they succumbed to their injuries or thirst.
Mae West jackets were only floatable for a day or two, before they would soak the water in.
Sailors were forced to take jackets from the dead. The dead that hours before were their friends.
3 out of 4 sailors never made it.

    I blame the Japanese submarine.

Also while reading about the USS Indianapolis, and how she delivered parts of Little Boy to Japan, I came across that ...

The Smithsonian Institution displays a Little Boy; it was complete, except for enriched uranium, until 1986. The Department of Energy took the weapon from the museum to remove its inner components, so the bombs could not be stolen and detonated with fissile material. The government returned the emptied casing to the Smithsonian in 1993.

So until 1986 they had a almost fully fonctioning atomic bomb on display in Washington DC??? :n00b:
