I dropped my Galaxy 7 in the hot tub and fumbled entirely too much with it getting it out of the water. Ingress must be slow enough that it was unaffected by this. Such a device would operate without problems, totally submerged in perfect distilled water, what we called DI (deionized) water in chemistry class. If you wind up with snot in your circuitry, make sure the battery is disconnected, and wash and rewash with DI water until it's clean, it'll be fine.

So far, I've lost about 50 "fake" followers.

There was a point last year where I was getting a lot of new ones... really generic accounts.

Yeah my Note 5 never revived. Charging port looks all gross and rusty already. Probably would have destroyed it if I'd tried to take it apart... would be nice to get back to the day of easily removable batteries.

I am lucky though... I was due for a new phone at work, anyway... grabbed an S9+ from Verizon... which works great with my previous AT&T SIM.

Would have wanted to hold out another month or two and see what the Note 9 was offering... but couldn't go that long.

The smart money says the $5 billion is jizya
I admit, I had to look that one up.

And I'll say this, as much as tariffs are bad for a global economy, these EU ruling are worse.

In my industry, I'm feeling some heartache from EU directives.

So the term "deepfakes" is floating around... and possibly not the reason you think.

Deepfakes Are Coming. And They're Dangerous.

Marco Rubio even tweeted about deepfakes yesterday, and linked a video of him speaking to the Heritage Foundation about it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNnr3PKP8eY&feature=youtu.be

Deepfakes are definitely a technological marvel... Take one person's face and put it on another person's body... even move the face around to make it look like they're saying something that they aren't.

While the term gained popularity among celebrity fake porn videos... it's coming up again with regards to politics... Could be a powerful tool to make politicians (even Presidents) look like they're saying something that they didn't. That's what people are warning about today... Treat everything with skepticism.

Those have been around for a while now, but are improving with time. Unfortunately, it will soon get to the point where even video of an event will not be reliable evidence.

Not only are they getting better, but the tools for making the videos are becoming more distributed and easy to use.

I think we'll see celebrities going to greater lengths to protect their likeness. The more pics the software has access to, the more realistic the fake (generally speaking).

This is probably way too optimistic of me... but perhaps this technology could lead to a decline in narcissism.

    Follow me here:

Deepfake apps make it very easy for anyone to create embarrassing videos of you.
Word is spread through the media of this risk.
People make an effort to take down all of their photos on the internet (ammunition for deepfakes, essentially.)
People make an effort to stop posting themselves on the internet.
    World Peace achieved.

    haha

I think this reveals a fundamental difference between you and I: deeply ingrained cynicism. :)

My first thought progression was that reputations will become meaningless, because video could be made to have anyone do anything. Nothing would be believed because everything would be believable. Perhaps more importantly, everything could be denied as a deepfake.

I don't know. I wonder if it will ever be possible to do it without leaving a trace. Digital forensics are also advancing all the time. Like anything there is a constant battle going on.
