Judging by the angle of the dangle, I would say it's not 'hardwood'.

The hot air rising from the fire creates the low pressure. Air comes in radially to replace the rising air except where you are standing. There will be small vortex in the air moving in around you, hence a low pressure zone.

We used to hear that "smoke follows beauty" from one of my mom's friends until one day her husband heard her say that and his exact words were, "It also follows a big wind."
