    So you can salute officers in garrison. Not in the field though.

    Had a couple of second Louies jump me for not saluting in the field. The best was a new officer that I met on the way to the mess hall to whom I explained that we call that a field firing squad. He said we were only in training, to which I replied what you do in training is what you will do in combat.

    I turned to walk away and the Division Commander was walking toward me as we passed I said good morning sir and walked on.

    We use to joke that saluting a lieutenant in the field was a good way to check for snipers without putting yourself in danger. :):

    Back in my day (before the single point slings) if you were in the field your hands were filled with a weapon at almost all times. No slings allowed unless you were carrying a machinegun. :yesway:
