Two things:

1) I just listened to a podcast on the history of the stethoscope (party animal!) it was the nestling of one's ears between the bosoms to listen to the heart which was the impetus. I don't know how that would have worked, what with the motorboat sounds and all.

2) As to other old timey medical treatments, have you heard of female hysteria and the treatment doctors would give for the same?
