I always remind myself that should I pull my weapon in a situation, it will most likely cost me a minimum of $10,000. If I have enough time and focus to remind myself of that fact, the situation is not life threatening and my weapon should not be used. However, if the situation requires an immediate response and I do not have the time or focus to remind myself of the possible cost, then my life is in danger and my weapon should be used.
