Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ousts Joe Crowley

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district, CNN projects, in the most shocking upset of a rollicking political season.

Ocasio-Cortez, an activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley -- the fourth-ranked Democrat in the House -- outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin...

This is a perfect example of why the two party system is a problem. It’s a positive feedback loop to the bottom. We’re in anspot now where the only candidates that can be in the running are on either sid will be the radicals. The far right nationalists win in the south. The far left socially insane socialists win in the north. Do the math. We’re ****ed.

It seems more complicated than that. It actually correlates better with population density than north and south where the high-density areas are liberal and lower density areas are conservative. Some states are dominated by a small number of high-density cities.

I doubt if we have ever had this 'unity' thing but it seems like we are moving further from it than we used to be.

If common sense doesn't make a big comeback this will not end well.

I think Tip O'Neil once said that all politics is local. While the far left might see this as a beginning I'd be curious about the local issues. Her opponent has been in NY politics a long time, which might mean serious corruption issues. Doubt if big media ever brings it up though.

    Complete unity? No.

Something that enough people believed in to have a great deal of unity? Sure. Examples of things that, in the past had a unifying effect.

    WW2
Communists (until the baby boomers started taking over)
Basic Judeo-Christian values (whether or not you were Judeo or Christian)
The belief that America is the "good guy"
The believe that America is the "land of opportunity"
    Work ethic
Capitalism is a generally a good thing
    Freedom is preferable

Sure, different people accepted these things to a greater or lesser extent, but they had the effect of unifying most people even if there were disagreements around the edges.

Wow! What a great list! Every one of those hits home personally with me except WWII. I wasn't in WWII since I wasn't born yet but my Dad and two Uncles were.

Those were all great American unifiers.

Then look what the left has done to try to destroy most of them.

5th Amendment entitles everyone to due process.

No, it doesn't. Foreign nationals on foreign soil and at border crossings are not entitled to US constitutional protections. International law and rules of war, yes, as applicable. Constitutional rights, no.

Since all that "due process" really means is legal process which is not inherently unjust, I'm pretty sure it does apply to anyone involved in US legal proceedings.

Whether people fall within the jurisdiction of the the US legal system, is a whole different question.

The propaganda wing of the administration, Fox News, is setting up shop in the White House:
WASHINGTON — Former Fox News executive Bill Shine is expected to take a senior communications role in the White House, according to people familiar with the matter.
Shine isn’t expected to be formally appointed communications director, a job that has been vacant since March. But he is likely to serve as a deputy chief of staff with responsibilities that include overseeing the White House communications office, the people said.

I have no idea why "marke****ch" is filtered... oh nevermind, yes, I do.

Great quote to remember from Charlie Hurt on Tucker Carlson last night.

"I would argue that Donald Trump got himself reelected this week, from this crazy socialist stuff, Maxine Waters, the haranguing people in public. It's all playing into Trump's hands."
