After all my post the rifle I reach for is a Browning High Wall in .38-55. To about 500 yards it will shoot with the .45-70 then the wind starts blowing the lighter bullet around. The .38-55 does not hurt as much as the .45-70 the next day if you shoot a long string. The Army did prove that the .45-70 Trapdoor could shoot MOA at 2 mile, but MOA at 2 mile won't get the deer unless you get lucky.

Sounds like a beauty. Let's see pics!
Stock up on brass. Starline has it time to time in long and short brass. I have been able to find 38-55 ammo in unexpected shops from time to time.

Single shot rifles like the Sharps or Browning or Ruger are just awesome rifles no matter what caliber you choose.
Go for the .45-70; it’s a thumper! :wavey:

So... I just stumbled across this: Cimarron "Rifle from Down Under".

It's got me thinking again. Doesn't come with the correct rear tang sight, but that can be added. Couple other subtle differences, but I'm not a clone perfectionist. I liked that it's made for modern 45-70 smokeless pressure, but no the +P stuff. Looks like a winner to me.
