Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that history has shown that Joe McCarthy was pretty much on the money. Much of the government WAS infested with Communists, particularly the State Department.

Not only are you absolutely correct, but our own government had hard evidence of this while it was happening, before, during, and after the time of McCarthy. The biggest difference between then and now is that the .gov was then full of closet traitors and now they feel no need to hide themselves.
