As the last of the dinner dishes were being rinsed and put in the dish washer the TV went to bars and a tone much as the tests for the emergency broadcast system..

As the tone was completing Steve came in from the garage through the mud room kicking off his garage shoes as he slid into the kitchen in stocking feet..

The message was what Steve anticipated. Coasts are not under US control, Mexican border is under the control of the cartels and some additional troops dressed like Mexican regulars. Canada was helping fend of the border control but groups of irregularly dressed military are controlling nearly every bridge and major border crossings. Rail service between the US and Canada has also been suspended due to bridges near the border being blown up rather than the invaders guarding them.

Most of the government was either unheard of or intransit to a safe location. Steve knew that in some cases they were already in a safe location with dark comms.. Top down any elected official becomes a target in an invasion, anyone who represents the government, federal agents, etc. are also targets.

Steve went down to his room and fired up his passive radio equipment making sure to not turn on any transmitters. As he sat down in front of a laptop reaching down he grabbed the TV remote and turned it on. The same news loop had returned to the screen. As the scanners finished initializing the CB squawked on nearly every channel, older folks with no cell phones used CB for some simple communications around the county much as they had since the 80’s. Passing along news and gossip like it was breathing..

There were reports on the scanner and other direct intel feeds that Steve still had some access to through “old friends” who hehad served with and trusted.

As Steve opened an email from an unknown@unknown.com email address, it had a code and an encrypted file attached. Steve reached down into a file cabinet drawer on the left side of the desk and pulled out a blue three ring binder. After flipping it to a page with nothing but numbers on it he scanned it for a key. That key then went into an encryption file on his laptop which returned another set of numbers. Steve wrote these numbers down on a post it note and then returned the blue binder to its drawer and stood and turned to the book shelve which consumed one whole wall of “Steve’s Room.” After a brief search he pulled a small old book from the shelves and returned to the desk with it. Sitting down Steve flipped it open to a page, scanned it, then wrote something on the post it note. He continued with this three more times. Eventually he had four words.

Steve took the file and transferred it to a thumb drive. Then took the thumb drive over to a separate desk top sitting on a small shelf to the right of Steve’s desk. This gap computer had never been connected to any other computer or the internet and had no way to. Once the file had transferred to the computers drive the thumb drive was deleted and formatted. As the files were being deleted off the thumbdrive Steve opened the transferred files. They were aerial recon photos from satellites that watch the east coast and then some harder to make out pictures from the west coast but they had some cloud blockages on some key intersections. These photos had been taken about 10 hours earlier. They showed many locations the invaders had taken over and turned into holding areas and or make shift camps.

While going through the photos a “ding” went off on Steve’s Laptop. Steve walked over and sat down to see it was a private message from “MmmBurns” which Steve knew was MarkBurns the group communications specialist that had been sent about 16 hours ago.

Message read, “Delta level” which meant switch on all passive recording devices and keep tabs on all radio, tv and other sources of news.

Steve knew they had some intel but most was general nonspecific and from regular outlets.

I may post the rest of what I have written but this along with the other stories I have may be put into a compilation. I am thinking about modifying them to all be about the same "event" but from the different perspectives.

    Stay tuned...
