This was related to me by local LEO.

An older gentleman, working in scrap metal recycling in Southern Indiana, was contacted by a guy wanting to sell him some aluminum scrap.

Arrangements were made to meet at the refuse yard and after weighing the aluminum scrap out the owner was asked if the two guys that showed up could wander around and look at his yard. They were told yes.

Upon returning to the office the old man was asked if he had any concerns about being out in the middle of nowhere by himself and the owner replied that he had never had any problems.

One of the pair advised the old man that today was the day to be concerned and told him they were robbing him.

The owner, who is known to carry large amounts of cash, said they could have whatever they wanted but just leave him his wallet because of his SS card and other important documents.

As he sat behind his desk the young punks started to advance on him and the old man drew a 9mm he was carrying.

Needless to say it was asses and elbows then.

Police said this MO had been seen before in Southern Indiana.

Moral of the story is this:

This gentleman had gotten away from daily carry for a while. On this morning he had a feeling that compelled him grab his 9.

    You never know. . . . . . Always carry !!! :rockwoot:

I hope he was able to create a few holes in those *********s.

Seems like this kind of thing is happening more and more frequently.

Smart old man though...let them think they are getting what they want, then give them something they were not expecting. Very slick.

So... Two guys "advancing" is enough to shoot them? You know nothing of the circumstances. The threat of being shot ended it. Let's scratch the itchy trigger finger some other way.

You're right. I stand corrected. I didn't initially understand the 'asses and elbows' statement as a description of them turning and running. My last mental image was of the announcment of a robbery and an advance on the 'victim'.

I would think that advancing AFTER openly declaring that they were robbing him is sufficient.

From a jury standpoint you're probably right. But I'm trying to separate the act of drawing from the act of firing. Many times having a gun pointed at the advancing party will end the threat. If there's no time, shoot from the hip after you've cleared the holster.

For the record, I am under 40 but figured out what that old man's phrase meant ;)

    That's a standard MO.
It's been attempted on me a few times. By the time they'd start the "Well, this is the day to be concerned" bit, I've already quiety unholstered. At this point, I say go for it and come up because it's in their ballpark to run or dance. Game on now.
Once though, I had two in my yard looking through my stuff. With my pistol by my side I 'addressed' them and wife was backing me from 4'oclock with hers drawn and phone at her ear. One then says "We're Police!". OopsThey slowly got their ID out while I was at 'SUL' I believe it's called, and all was well, but it was kinda tense for a few moments. Turned out, there had been another assault at my place they were investigating in the daylight hours.
BTW, they approved we way the wife and I handled the situation.
