These are the two styles of a knife I am in the process of making. Never made one before, but I have this urge to make something and since my flintlock kit hasn't arrived, this will have to do. Thinking either a flat grind or scandi, in 1/4" 1095 or O1. Subdued G10 scales with 3 pins and a tubed lanyard hole with an acid etched finish.

The more I talk to people the Flat seems to get more votes, so to speak. I've got the pattern dialed and will be mocking scales and adding them to this tomorrow. This weekend, I'll probably make them out of a mild steel to prototype them. I'm still a ways off from cutting the 1095 and O1.

I'd go with the flat grind, personally. If you have a flintlock kit coming you might consider doing a patch knife, too. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Sweet! I would go with a flat grind. I've just never liked Scandi grinds a whole lot.

But be sure to keep the wooden mockups around too. In case of vampires.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say scandi :) they are so freaking easy to maintain. though so is a flat. If it's a woods bumming wood working tool the scandi is the best grind. If it's a do it all knife then a full flat grind would be my other choice. I love me a scandi though! especially when the whole edge is polished up looking beautiful :)

Thank guys for all the heads up. Making some small progress, just found out my neighbor makes knives and has a kiln when the time comes. Now I just need to call that favor into the water jet operator I should know.

What diameter is the actual finger choil, below the guard? Sometimes it gets made to small, and causes injury from abrasion during use. Or is unusable with gloves. 1" is typical and 1.25" fits most really well...... Just something to think about.

The blank looks good! Nicely done in transference. Very cool!

I used a quarter for the drawing and ground to the outside edge of the sharpie, 1.125-1.2 is my guess. It is over an inch just slightly. I am taking my time and going slow. I made a few wood blanks and ground them like they were steel. Now going to repeat with some junk mild steel and get a good hang before hitting the O1 and 1095. My tools are very crude and this is a real learn as I go endeavor.

So I began grinding the bevel in one of the wood blanks. It took a bit to get it down, but it seems to work well. I will make some changes to the jig tomorrow and begin to work the steel this week. I think every knife guy in my neighborhood at spent at least 15 mins standing in my drive way watching me work today.

Blank work is done for a bit. I've made a few now out of the crap mild steel and am getting them consistent now.
