IIRC, because this is a Catholic hospital, they refuse to provide emergency contraception to rape victims.

This was a big controversy in a Poli Sci class I took at IUSB circa 2006... Not sure if they have changed their policy or not.

But that alone made me decide to avoid them at all costs.

Not sure what that has to do with this thread, but that would make me more likely to "overlook" their gun sign and use them.

Oh goody an abortion topic. This debate will have two sides, no one will change any opinions, and nothing will come of it but an argument.

The only thing I will add is that everyone has the right to their opinion, but the opinions of some (usually religious based) should not be used to govern all.

The Founding Father's disagreed with you.

However, since religious topics are forbidden here, and you probably know that, you threw out a challenge that cannot be debated without risking the Mods ire..

Not to usurp the thread... But should they be forced to do something against their belief system? I thought this was a pro-librety forum...

I also work at a hospital that is Catholic and we do not provide emergency contraceptive services. However, much like a Wendy's replies when you order a big Mac:" I'm sorry, that's not a service we provide here. Let me give you information on places you can seek care that can fulfill your need"

from Lies about laws to abortion in 12 posts. :rockwoot:

Really though. State law doesn't "prohibt" jack ****. It also doesn't prohibit carrying in a hospital.

as for the kids and signs... raise them bilingual, then teach them to only ask you about signs like that in whatever other language.

They are a Trinity Health facility which is based out of Michigan. Michigan Law says no carry in Hospitals and I bet they are using Michigan law in all the facilities.

I spent a lot of time up there moving in equipment when the place opened. Nice hospital, stupid rule/sign.

I only have a problem with these signs when my kids are with me.
"Hey daddy! That sign says that you can't bring a gun in here. You have a gun don't you daddy." Why did we ever teach them to read.

Whew, what a grin,I was never so happy as the day my daughter started talking, now 17 years later she still cant keep her mouth shut, funny how those things always come at inopertune times.

^This most likely an "oversight" by them since they are based in MI and use a std template for all their bldgs and just used the same text for their IN bldg.

So in MI it's illegal to take a gun to a hospital? :dunno:

Because you're afraid of getting pregnant? :dunno:

:D I'm a strong capitalist. I disagree with their practice of not offering emergency contraception to rape victims, so I have decided not to do business with them.

So you believe that a private institution should be forced to kill human life against their will?

I know you weren't replying to me with this comment, but I feel the exact opposite. They have every right to choose or choose not to provide emergency contraception: and I have every right to choose or choose not to do business with them. I feel this policy is asinine. If they ever change their stance, I'll change mine.

As opposed to the sacred life of the poor rape victim who might not want to carry around and raise half a rapist? Babies aren't the only people who have rights. I don't think women should be forced to perpetuate the life of rapists against their will.

:yesway: Exactly how I feel. I consider emergency contraception in the event of rape/child molestation/incest etc. to be a "basic" medical option that makes intuitive sense. Ultimately, the victim should be left to choose which course of action is best for her. I simply feel that a rational, well-grounded medical institution should provide such an option regardless of religious/moral leanings.

Oh goody an abortion topic. This debate will have two sides, no one will change any opinions, and nothing will come of it but an argument.

The only thing I will add is that everyone has the right to their opinion, but the opinions of some (usually religious based) should not be used to govern all.

I apologize for the thread-jack. I didn't mean for my comment to start a new line of discussion. My intent was only to add that I now have two legitimate reasons not to do business with them.

Not to usurp the thread... But should they be forced to do something against their belief system? I thought this was a pro-librety forum...

    I appreciate this response.

My understanding of the controversy (again, circa 2006) was that not only did they not provide emergency contraception, but that there were instances where coercion - bordering on deception - was used to keep rape victims from seeking such treatment. Now, the last thing I want to do is perpetuate a myth or a lie about a highly-reputed medical institution, so I must say that I have never seen any hard evidence/proof of this assertion - but it was brought up in discussion by people who had first-hand experiences with the hospital.

In the interest of full-disclosure, I have seen the name of one of these individuals in news articles associated with the Chic-Fil-A "controversy" at IU South Bend as of late... So my assumption about her character is that she is no stranger to making outlandish statements or drawing illogical conclusions about the motivations of for-profit institutions...

and yes, emergency contraception does not actually prevent conception in so much as it prevents implantation.

For the record, this is not true. Emergency contraception of the type that is legal in the U.S. works primarily by preventing ovulation. It is the same mechanism as the standard birth control pill.

    Sorry for the threadjack.

    Mishawaka
A lady in our church had a heart attack on Monday night, and was recovering at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. I went to visit her on Tuesday, and as I approached the door, I saw a sign that stated "State Law Prohibits Carrying A Handgun On These Premises". I was appalled that they would assume that their own policies would constitute state law. I went ahead and emailed them the following letter.
